The Philippine Army has condemned the communist terrorist group New People’s Army (NPA) for disrupting livelihood training in two remote villages of Can-avid, Eastern Samar, resulting in a clash that wounded three soldiers.
Lt. Col. Joven Bugarin, commanding officer of Army’s 52nd Infantry Battalion, on Wednesday said soldiers were heading to the far-flung villages of Boco and Balagon to secure the area for the upcoming launching of a project when attacked by NPA rebels on Tuesday morning in Salvacion village.
The launching of Agrikultura at Kabuhayan tungo sa Kaunlaran at Kapayapaan (AKKAP) project is scheduled on Thursday. The livelihood training under AKKAP is part of the effort of the provincial task force to end local communist armed conflict in order to bring peace to remote villages of Can-avid town.
“Three soldiers were wounded while an undetermined casualty was reported on the enemy side. Traces of bloodstains in the area they abandoned suggest that many in the NPA were wounded,” Bugarin said in a statement sent to reporters.
At the encounter site, government troops recovered two landmines, blasting caps, and electrical wires. The Army believes these would be used by the NPA rebels in their terrorist attack.
On December 13, 2019, three civilians were killed while 14 were wounded, including two minors and an infant, due to the NPA's roadside bombing in Libuton village, Borongan City, Eastern Samar.
In April 2019, a nine-year-old boy died in another NPA bombing attack in San Miguel village, Las Navas, Northern Samar. On October 7, four civilians, including two teachers were wounded in a landmine attack in Tagbayaon village in Jiabong, Samar.
The NPA, which has been waging a five-decade armed struggle against the government, is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines.
