Philippine govt soldiers kill 8 suspected Islamic State-linked militants in Mindanao firefight

From BenarNews (Jan 26, 2024): Philippine govt soldiers kill 8 suspected Islamic State-linked militants in Mindanao firefight (Richel V. Umel)

Eight suspected Filipino militants belonging to a local group allied with Islamic State extremists were killed and four government soldiers wounded in fierce fighting in the southern Philippines on Thursday, the military said Friday.

The gun-battle between members of the Daulah Islamiyah-Maute Group (DI-Maute) and soldiers with the 103rd Infantry Brigade broke out in the late afternoon in Piagapo, a remote town in Lanao del Sur province, military officials said.

The soldiers were on a mission to hunt down two suspected DI-Maute militants who had been identified as the main perpetrators of a bombing that killed four people during a Catholic worship service at a university gymnasium in southern Marawi city in early December.

According to military officials, the Filipino militants were apparently acting under the instructions of the Islamic State, which had earlier owned up to the attack.

“During the military operations the troops killed eight enemies,” Brig. Gen. Yegor Rey Baroquillo Jr., commander of the 103rd, told BenarNews. After the firefight, troops retrieved the bodies of the slain militants, he said.

Baroquillo said four members of the Scout Rangers, who were wounded in the fighting, were brought to a local hospital. He did not divulge the extent of their wounds.

He said the troops were after the Marawi bombers and that search operations were focused on three Lanao towns believed to be strongholds of the DI-Maute: Pantao Ragat, Poona PIagapo and Munai.

Brig. Gen. Anthon Abrina, commander of the 2nd Mechanized Infantry Brigade, told BenarNews in a phone interview that “we are on heightened, red alert status following the encounter Thursday evening.”

Troop reinforcements have been brought in and several checkpoints were established along the national highway leading to the areas “to ensure the safety of civilians in their respective communities,” Abrina said.

The towns in Lanao are near the city of Marawi, where the bombing took place.

Military chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. has blamed the DI-Maute group for the bombing, saying it was carried out as revenge for a military operation elsewhere in the south that left over a dozen militants killed.

Two of those killed were identified as Mundi Sawadjaan and Jalandoni Lucsadato. Sawadjaan has been identified as a sub-leader of the Abu Sayyaf, another Islamic State-linked group in the southern Philippines.

He was also the nephew of the late Hatib Hajan Sawadjaan, who was thought to be the group’s leader before he was killed in 2020. The elder Sawadjaan at one time was also named as the IS leader for the Philippines.

Hatib Hajan Sawadjaan also masterminded a January 2019 bombing at a Catholic church on southern Jolo island that killed 23 people including an Indonesian couple blamed for the suicide attack, according to Philippine authorities.

Philippines: After decades of terror, peace returns to island of Jolo

From France 24 (Apr 28, 2023): Philippines: After decades of terror, peace returns to island of Jolo

Go to the following URL for video report: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vOCqb0pl2g

For a long time, the island of Jolo, one of the southernmost points of the Philippines archipelago, was off limits. It was the stronghold of one of the most violent terrorist movements in the world, Abu Sayyaf. In 2000, a group of 20 tourists were kidnapped in Malaysia and taken to Jolo. Journalists who covered the kidnapping were then also captured. Negotiations for their release took several months Today, after 30 years of fighting with the Philippine army, Abu Sayyaf is almost defeated and the island has begun to find peace. FRANCE 24’s Constantin Simon, Alexis Bregere, Sherbien Dacalanio and Aruna Popuri report.

Created in the 1990s, Abu Sayyaf carried out numerous atrocities – assassinations, kidnappings, piracy and extortions – with the aim of creating an Islamist state in the south of the Philippines. The group's favourite method of execution was beheading with a sword.

Today, its last members are hiding out in the jungle and mountains. The army claims to have secured the island and has set up a programme to help Abu Sayyaf's repentant members reintegrate into society.

PUERTO PRINCESA, Palawan – Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and Philippine Air Force (PAF) personnel on Friday jointly launched a massive search and rescue operation for seven individuals aboard a motorized “banca” (boat) believed to have been driven off course by violent ocean conditions while navigating the Sulu Sea en route to mainland Palawan.

The boat, along with its passengers, left Calandagan Island on Jan. 24 and was headed for the coastal municipality of Araceli when it was reported missing Thursday. Calandagan is a four-square-kilometer island village under the jurisdiction of Araceli town but separated by a stretch of ocean.

The PCG identified the missing individuals as Roberto Bacolod, Aljon Edar, Jan Paalan, Jackie Paalan, Thomas Vigonte, Roque Lohan, and Alfredo Abad, all residents of Calandagan.

Ensign Chrieson Dave Gabayan, who heads the Public Affairs Office of PCG-Palawan, said the missing boat may have been carried out into the waters off Roxas municipality due to strong winds and waves.

He noted that upon receiving the report of the missing boat on Thursday, the PCG quickly sought assistance from the PAF, which quickly responded by allocating a Sokol 925 helicopter for an aerial search.

The PCG dispatched its BRP Melchora Aquino, a 317-foor multi-role response vessel, to comb the ocean surface for the missing craft.

"PCG stations in the Araceli area, along with neighboring barangays, have been placed on heightened alert to optimize the scope of search operations and hasten the discovery of the missing motor banca and its passengers," he said.
