At least 55 soldiers who completed the two-week Civil-Military Operations (CMO) Competency Enhancement Training will help authorities address violent extremism, the commander of the Army's 1st Infantry Division said in a statement on Wednesday
Maj. Gen. Generoso Ponio said the training, which ended Tuesday, aims to enhance the skills, knowledge, and attitudes of participants to improve the division's civil affairs, public affairs, and psychological operations.
In particular, Ponio said violent extremism was given emphasis and how it is being used by terrorists to achieve and gain support with their "radical ideological, religious, and even political views".
Of the 55 trainees from the different infantry and operational control units of the 1ID, 35 have attended the on-site training after complying with the standard health procedures while the rest joined via video teleconferencing, as part of the division's effort to adapt to the new normal amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.
Ponio urged the participants to be "steadfast and remain disciplined to win the support of the public".
"The best CMO is a disciplined soldier. With the CMO skillset you have just acquired coupled with self-discipline, you can now be an effective CMO practitioner,” he added.
