MANILA – The Military Ordinariate of the Philippines (MOP) on Wednesday supported the call of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to dismantle private armies and confiscate illegal firearms amid the recent killing of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo.

Military Ordinariate chancellor Fr. Harley Flores supported the move of the government as it promotes peace and security, and prevent further killings and violence.

"Private armies and illegal firearms only serve to promote lawlessness and instability, and they threaten the peace and security of the communities they operate in. It is therefore the responsibility of the government to take strong action to dismantle these groups and confiscate their weapons," Flores said in a statement.

The Catholic priest said the recent incident only shows that there is a need to address such problem.

"These violent acts have no place in a civilized society governing a responsible citizenry under just laws," Flores added.

On March 4, Degamo and eight others were killed when gunmen opened fire at the governor's residence compound in Pamplona town, Negros Oriental province.

Marcos then ordered a crackdown against private armies and the confiscation of illegal firearms.

The MOP has ecclesiastical jurisdiction over the Catholic Churches serving in the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine National Police and the Philippine Coast Guard.
