Camp Navarro, Calarian, Zamboanga City – April 3, 2023
A lawless element was apprehended and firearms were seized following an encounter between an armed lawless group and the military in Maguindanao del Sur Sunday morning, April 2.
Troops of the 57th Infantry Battalion acted in a report that an armed group was seen at Sitio Kinemkem, Romongaob, South Upi, Maguindanao del Sur. While the soldiers were approaching the reported location, they were fired upon by still undetermined perpetrators. A firefight ensued for about three minutes, after which the lawless elements scampered in different directions leaving behind their wounded comrade.
Clearing operations followed which resulted in the apprehension of Romy Kapitan, a.k.a. Susong, who was slightly wounded on the left temple. Kapitan is a wanted criminal with standing four arrest warrants.
Operating troops also recovered the following on the encounter site; one M14 rifle, one M16A1 rifle, one cal. 45 pistol, and assorted magazines and ammunition.
The apprehended personality was turned-over to South Upi Municipal Police Station for proper disposition, while the recovered firearms and ammunition were placed under the custody of the 57IB for safekeeping.
Joint Task Force Central Commander, Maj. Gen. Alex Rillera said the military will continue to conduct security operations in Central Mindanao, to ensure a peaceful commemoration of the Holy Week.
For his part, Lt. Gen. Roy Galido, Commander of Western Mindanao Command expressed his appreciation to the concerned citizen who gave the information. “We are extremely grateful to all the people who walk with us in the journey toward lasting peace and progress here in Mindanao.”
