The series of atrocities by the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) in the Visayas regions manifest its barbarism amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) crisis, an Army official said on Thursday.

"These terrorists are worse than the Covid-19 pandemic. (Even in) crisis, they continue with their antagonism rather than help people in need,”
said Maj. Gen. Eric Vinoya, commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, which covers the provinces in Western and Central Visayas.

For the month of April alone, while the country is under a state of public health emergency,
government troops have figured in five encounters with the communist rebels in Iloilo, Negros Occidental, and Bohol, which claimed the lives of four soldiers.

In Iloilo, a soldier died during a clash on April 7 in Lambunao, while responding troops in Miagao encountered communist rebels in the NPA training ground at Sitio Anoy, Cabalaunan village on April 18, following persistent reports of extortion and recruitment activities.

In Negros Occidental, two clashes involved troops doing security operations and Covid-19 awareness campaign.

Three soldiers died during the encounter in Barangay Carabalan, Himamaylan City on April 19 while on April 24, two soldiers were injured while four communist rebels were killed in a firefight in Barangay Gawahon, Victorias City.

On April 26, troops deployed to secure the distribution of government cash assistance also engaged communist-terrorists in a firefight in Bilar, Bohol.

“The series of movements of the NPA from their lairs towards the communities and the populace reflect their real intention of taking advantage of the pandemic," Vinoya said.

Even in the most trying times of the Filipinos, they continue to extort from the masses, recruit people to go against the government, and plan tactical offensives against government forces and vital installations, he added.

Vinoya also said that as more government services reach the people, the social issues touted by the CPP-NPA will just be "reduced into baseless propaganda."

"The efforts of the Philippine Army, together with other government agencies in the frontlines, will showcase the true service deserved by the people," he added.

The CPP-NPA, which has been waging a five-decade armed struggle against the government, is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines.
