Two suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels were killed on Thursday morning in a clash with police operatives in Monreal town, Masbate province.
Maj. Maria Luisa Calubaquib, Police Regional Office-5 spokesperson, said a 15-man NPA group exchanged fire with the police officers who were "about to serve a warrant of arrest to a wanted person in Barangay Mc Arthur at around 5:10 a.m."
She added that the brief gunbattle led to the killing of the two communist rebels and the recovery of two carbines and an M16 rifle.
“The identities of the slain rebels are not yet available as of this time,” Calubaquib said in an interview.
No one was injured among the police operatives, she added.
The NPA, along with its political wing, the Communist Party of the Philippines, is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines.
