Government troops recovered a cache of firearms belonging to the communist New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in the province of Zamboanga del Norte, military officials said Wednesday.
Lt. Col. Don Templonuevo, Army’s 44th Infantry Battalion commander, said the arms cache was discovered Tuesday in Barangay Bunawan, Godod town, following a tip from a former NPA rebel who had surrendered following a firefight earlier this month in Siay municipality, Zamboanga Sibugay.
Templonuevo said the arms cache contains two assault AK-47 rifles and a caliber .45 pistol that belonged to the defunct Guerrilla Front 13 of the NPA’s Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee.
Col. Leonel Nicolas, the Army’s 102nd Infantry Brigade commander, said the recovery was a big blow to the firepower capability of the NPA rebels and will definitely demoralize their followers.
To date, Nicolas said the Army’s 44th Infantry Battalion have recovered three M-16 Armalite rifles, two AK-47 assault rifles, and a caliber .45 pistol.
Maj. Gen. Generoso Ponio, the Army's 1st Infantry Division commander, has called on the remaining NPA fighters in the mountains to come down and return to the fold of the law.
Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, commander of the Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom), said he hopes the rebels would be "enlightened by our genuine commitment that they may choose to abandon banditry and aid our efforts against insurgency.”
The NPA is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines.
