CAMP SIONGCO, Maguindanao -- Army troopers found more improvised bombs Wednesday in the government's ongoing operation against the Islamic State-inspired Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) in Maguindanao.
Troops belonging to the Army’s 57th Infantry Battalion (IB) found the improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Barangay Pusao, Shariff Saydona Mustapha while pursuing the BIFF and the Dawlah Islamiyah Terror Group (DITG).
Lt. Col. Edwin Alburo, 57th IB commander, said ground troops found an IED made from a “Jetmatic” water pump, four claymore mine type IEDs, and IED-making components, such as blasting caps, electric wires, assorted nails, and black powder.
“Our troops manning the checkpoint have tightened the security within the boundaries of the area of the operation,” Alburo said referring to the so-called “SMPS box”.
The SPMS box pertains to the neighboring towns of Shariff Aguak, Pagatin (Datu Saudi), Mamasapano, and Salibo where the outlawed BIFF mainly operates.
“We are tightly monitoring the terrorists for possible withdrawal from the area since we must contain them in the specific area of engagement,” Alburo added.
On the same day, troops belonging to the 1st Mechanized IB also found another IED in Barangay Pamalian, also in Shariff Saydona Mustapha.
The recovered IED was made from an 81-mm mortar round attached to a cellphone as a trigger mechanism and was positioned along the trail where the troops were about to pass.
“The IED in Barangay Pamalian was meant to inflict harm on our operating troops since the operation against those terror groups is gaining ground,” Lt. Col. James Fernandez, 1st MIB commander, said.
He added that the finding of more IEDs in the area is a clear manifestation that the local terror groups are planning to conduct fresh bombing attacks in Central Mindanao.
Maj. Gen. Diosdado C. Carreon, Army’s 6th Infantry Division commander and concurrent chief of Joint Task Force Central, has reminded everyone to be highly vigilant in reporting to them the presence of suspicious-looking individuals in the communities.
