SoCot distributes relief goods to Lake Sebu evacuees

From the Philippine News Agency (Jun 24, 2019): SoCot distributes relief goods to Lake Sebu evacuees

The provincial government of South Cotabato distributed relief assistance on Sunday to around 400 residents who evacuated anew last week from remote communities in Lake Sebu town due to a "rido" or clan feud in Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat.

Freda Liza Gazo, acting head of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), said Monday they brought some 250 relief packs to the evacuees, who are currently taking temporary shelter at the barangay hall compound of Barangay Ned, Lake Sebu.

Gazo said the displaced families were from Sitios Molmol, Kisayan and Kumilat, which are located near the boundary of Lake Sebu and Palimbang towns.

She said some 40 families or about 400 individuals have so far evacuated as a result of the conflict in Barangay Molon, Palimbang.

"These evacuees were just from the side of Barangay Ned," she told reporters.

The distribution of the relief packs, that include food and non-food commodities, was facilitated by the PDRRMO in coordination with village officials, she said.

Gazo said residents of the three sitios started to evacuate last Thursday due to tensions triggered by a land conflict among Moro families in Barangay Molon, Palimbang.

Police said a student was killed after being caught in the middle of armed clashes on Wednesday, June 19, between groups led by Mike Binago and Salik Adam.

The victim was identified as Richard Tulik Tungkay, 19, a student of Ned Proper National High School in Lake Sebu who hails from Barangay Molon, Palimbang.

In April, around 200 families in the area were also forced to flee due to armed clashes between warring families.
