KAMPO RANAO, Marawi City (DWDD) – Military forces in Marawi City are still conducting clearing operations in the main battle area to find and neutralize Maute stragglers.
According to Col Romeo Brawner, Deputy Commander, Joint Task Force Ranao, troops on the ground are still clearing areas in the whole of the MBA from unexploded ordnances, booby traps or improvised explosive devices and remaining Maute members and their supporters.
JTF Ranao does not have the exact number of stragglers/supporters but they are believed to be hiding in different locations within a 1.5 x 2kilometers MBA or equivalent to 24 barangays.
The clearing operations have resulted in the neutralization of one Maute member last Sunday (October 29) and two more just a few days ago. This is aside from the two Indonesian companions killed by Shayputra in his escape.
Based on the statement of captured Indonesian terrorist Shayputra, he revealed that there could still be 39 Maute members/supporters hiding in Marawi. The group is a mix of Filipino and foreign fighters and some family members. Although the group is armed and capable of inflicting harm to soldiers and civilians, but most are just in survival mode.
So far, the AFP has refused to set any timetable on the on-going clearing operations. AES
