The joint forces of the Pangasinan Police Provincial Office (PPPO) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) were still at the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Rosary of Manaoag here despite the return to normal alert status.

“Even though the police regional director has already lowered the alert level status, we do not neglect order and peace in the said church, especially that many people, including tourists, go there,” PPPO acting director Col. Redrico Maranan said in a radio interview on Tuesday.

Members of the police and AFP, along with K-9 dogs, are guarding the church, along with the church’s own security guards and K-9 dogs.

“We commend the management of the church for adding their security guards and having their own K-9 dogs,” he said.

Maranan asked the public, especially those visiting the church, not to be afraid of the security measures being implemented.

“It should add a sense of security to the churchgoers instead, because they are there to ensure no criminals would be able to (do) their schemes,” he added.

Red alert was raised over the church last August 12 amid a leaked memorandum concerning an alleged threat by Islamic State-linked terrorists against cities and churches in Northern Luzon, including the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Rosary of Manaoag.

Maranan said the alert level status of the church was lowered to normal on August 13.

Meanwhile, the Manaoag Police Station said it was generally peaceful in the area and the number of churchgoers did not decrease.
