An Army soldier recovers an improvised landmine at the seized NPA camp in Brgy. Camindangan, Sipalay City.
The discovery and seizure of a New People’s Army camp where homemade landmines and other improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were being manufactured in Brgy. Camindangan, Sipalay City, is a big blow to the communist rebels’ production of bombs, Brig. Gen. Ignacio Madriaga, 302nd Infantry Brigade commander, said yesterday.
Madriaga said the capability of NPA rebels to produce bombs and related IEDs and their sense of security have been downgraded due to the capture of their landmine factory on Sunday.
Five newly-completed IEDs (Improvised Explosives Devices), 1 and ¾ kilos of IED materials and components, 209 blasting caps, 175.5 inches of detonation cords, six assorted guns, 4,376 cuts of iron bars, 11 batteries, 25 switches, other materials for making explosives, as well as 75 rounds of assorted ammunition, were recovered at the bomb making facility by the combined forces of the 15th Infantry Battalion, Regional Mobile Force Battalion 7, PNP Special Action Force (SAF) and Provincial Mobile Force Company.
The bomb making facility inside the rebel camp was difficult to detect due to heavy vegetation and rock formations that hid it, Madriaga said.
Although the rebel occupants managed to escape, the pursuit operations led to the arrest of two suspected NPA rebels identified as Jory Mate and Roberto Tingson that also yielded a Mossberg shotgun and a homemade .38 caliber revolver with ammunition, Maj. Jake Barila, officer-in-charge of the Sipalay City Police Station, said yesterday.
Mate and Tingson, who are now in jail, are facing charges for illegal possession of firearms.
The seizure of the landmines and IEDs factory came after an encounter between government troopers and communist rebels in the place.
No casualty was reported among the rebels and government troopers.
