From the Visayan Daily Star (Jul 21): Aying favors ML extension
Army Maj. Gen. Jon Aying, 3rd Infantry Division commander, said yesterday he supports the extension of martial law in Mindanao,
The 3ID, that has two infantry units deployed in Mindanao – 11th and 15th Infantry Battalions – is supervised by Aying, and its area of operations include Western and Central Visayas, and the Negros Island Region.
Aying said the Armed Forces of the Philippines has yet to finish its job of addressing the problems of terrorism and insurgency in Mindanao.
He said what is needed first is to ensure the peace and stability in Mindanao conflict areas, before the start of its development.
Military records show that the AFP has already suffered 93 casualties in Marawi as of July 14, three of them members of the 15th Infantry Battalion.
The implementation of the 60-day martial law in Mindanao will end on July 22, with death toll having reached 537.
Imam Omar Betita head of Dar Al-Dhikr Islamic Call and Guidance Center in Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City, also expressed support to the martial law extension.
