Grenade attacks on Cotabato police stations enrage Bato

From the Manila Bulletin (Sep 1): Grenade attacks on Cotabato police stations enrage Bato

Philippine National Police Director General Ronaldo “Bato” Dela Rosa has prodded countryside lawmen, especially in troublesome areas of Central Mindanao to remain in the upper hand against law offenders and crime-prone individuals and groups.

In his inspection visit Tuesday at the regional police headquarters of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao at Camp S. K. Pendatun in Parang, Maguindanao, Dela Rosa underscored the reminder especially for lawmen in this city that has yet to unearth suspects in two recent grenade attacks on police facilities here.

Dela Rosa made another hyperbolic pitch against criminals, saying the Cotabato City police should also bomb the houses of suspects in the grenade attacks.

“Kung makikilala sila (suspects) ay ipa-granada din ang kanilang mga bahay,” he said, short of endorsing lex taliones (law of retaliation), the biblical prescription for “eye-for-an eye” justice system.

According to initial investigations, it was possible that a syndicate was behind the detonation last week of a military-type smoke grenade near the main police precinct at the downtown area here. The explosive prompted policemen and some detainees to get out of the station briefly amid heavy smoke.

The incident was followed by an attempt to bomb last Monday another police station at the Rosary Heights District of this city. A fragmentation grenade was lobbed by still unknown person at the roof of the police station but the blasting contraption of the explosive malfunctioned.
