From InterAksyon (Sep 1): ARMM to declare Maute group ‘terrorists’
(UPDATE - 8:36 a.m.) The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao is set to pin the “terrorist” tag on an armed group authorities say has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State.
A meeting of the Regional Peace and Order Council in Cotabato City Wednesday was informed that the ARMM is set to pass a resolution declaring the Maute group terrorists.
But the same day as the meeting, two men lobbed a grenade at the Maguindanao office of the National Irrigation Administration on Rosales Street, Cotabato, the third such attack since the weekend, when police stations were targeted.
The Council also discussed the possibility of sending “high risk criminals” arrested in the region straight to Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City to prevent a repeat of the jailbreak pulled off by the Maute group in Marawi City Sunday.
The group freed 23 detainees from the Lanao del Sur provincial jail, including eight members who were arrested on August 22 with improvised bombs and guns.
The Maute group was the target of a military operation on its stronghold in Butig town, Lanao del Sur in late May that left scores dead.
