Five soldiers from the 32nd Infantry Battalion of the
Philippine Army were hurt while an undetermined number of Abu Sayyaf Group
(ASG) bandits were believed killed and wounded following an attack on the
military unit's headquarters in Patikul, Sulu province Tuesday night.
The attack, which was carried out by an estimated 150 ASG
bandits, transpired at 8:15 p.m., said Joint Task Group Sulu commander Brig.
Gen. Alan Arrojado.
It lasted until 9:20 p.m. when the attack was repelled.
The fight resulted in the wounding of five soldiers and
killing and wounding of an undetermined number of the bandits headed by ASG
sub-commander Radullan Sahiron.
Arrojado said the brigands were planning to overrun the 32nd
Infantry Battalion headquarters but were easily foiled as all troops in the
facility were on alert for the conduct of Operation "Swift Justice,"
another focused military operation aimed at the ASG.
He added all nearby units were immediately deployed to aid
the 32nd Infantry Battalion.
After the fight, all five wounded troopers were evacuated
for treatment at the Kutang
Heneral Teodulfo
Bautista Station
Hospital in Jolo for
treatment.
Tracking and pursuit operations are still ongoing.
