Troops kill NPA, 2 others captured in Zambo town

Posted to the Mindanao Examiner (Sep 22, 2020): Troops kill NPA, 2 others captured in Zambo town

Security forces killed a communist insurgent and captured 2 others in the southern Filipino province of Zamboanga del Sur, officials said Tuesday.

A Philippine Army photo shows the two captured communist insurgents and personal belongings seized from them in Zamboanga del Sur's Dumingag town.

Brig. Gen. Leonel Nicolas, commander of the 102nd Infantry Brigade, said the fighting broke out late Monday afternoon after soldiers clashed with a group of New People’s Army (NPA) in Marangan village in Dumingag town.

He said soldiers and policemen pursuing the gunmen caught up with the duo - Balaas Bellano and Gemma Donsalo - who are native of the town.

They were carrying assorted personal belongings, including 5 sweat shirts with markings BHB or Bagong Hukbong Bayan; 16 cigarette lighters, 8 black pants, six cell phones, five t-shirts and P6,400 cash, among other items.

And the slain insurgent was turned over to Mayor Joan Abejuela. The dead gunman had been identified as Bernie Nuñez, also a local resident.

Maj. Gen. Generoso Ponio, commander of the 1st Infantry Division and the anti-terror Joint Task Force ZamPeLan (Zamboanga Peninsula, Lanao del Sur and Lanao del Norte), said the operation against the NPA is continuing in the province and areas nearby. “We relentlessly conduct focused and civil-military operations to eradicate all threats here in the Zamboanga Peninsula and the Lanao provinces,” he said.

The NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, is fighting for many decades now to overthrow the democratic government and install a Maoist state in the country. (Mindanao Examiner)
