DWDD: INTENSE OPERATIONS | Maute-IS camp seized, 3 killed in Lanao Del Sur clash

From Katropa DWDD-CRS Virtual RTV Facebook Page (Jan 28, 2019): INTENSE OPERATIONS | Maute-IS camp seized, 3 killed in Lanao Del Sur clash

KUTA MAJOR CESAR SANG-AN, Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur (DWDD) – After a 10-hour firefight 8:00 a.m. Thursday, government forces seized Maute-IS remnants camp in Sultan Dumalondong, Lanao del Sur.

...

Three remnants were also killed according to local sources while troops incurred three wounded.

The 55th “Vigilant” Infantry Battalion figured with more or less 24 Dawlah Islamiyah - Lanao remnants (formerly called Maute-IS) in an intense gunfight as they approached the remnant's lair.

The group is believed to be led by Abu Dhar, the appointed leader of the DI-Lanao Group.

“We acted on the information as reported by the residents and the local chief executives.” Notes Lt. Col Ian Ignes, Commanding Officer of the 55IB.

“The enemy was completely taken by surprise as evident from the direction of their initial gunfires. We met fierce resistance as soon as we hit their final defensive lines.” He adds.

The group has been hiding in the hinterlands of Lanao del Sur where they are well versed of the terrain.

“Despite the enemy’s advantage over the terrain, our troops were able to gain ground and managed to penetrate their defensive lines through timely and accurate supporting fires.” Notes Col Romeo S Brawner Jr, Commander of the 103rd Infantry Brigade leading the assault since Wednesday night.

Immediate fire support was provided through artillery and helicopters, sending the DI-Lanao remnants into their bunkers.

The splintered group then scattered for survival, abandoning their stronghold due to the intense ground and air support.

Exploitation of the site reveals several defensive positions to include running trenches and fortified bunkers. A training camp was also found some hundred meters from the terrorists' defensive lines.

“We are giving them a chance to live a peaceful and meaningful life. We are calling on the remaining Maute-IS fighters to surrender peacefully to the nearest military installation before the next combat operations falls into your doorsteps. Take this offer now before it’s too late.” said Col Romeo Brawner, 103rd Infantry Brigade Commander.

"The armed encounter is the result of our relentless campaign against Maute ISIS remnants and Abu Dar group," Said Maj. Gen. Roseller Murillo,1st Infantry Division and JTF Zampelan Commander.

"We also ask the local populace for their trust, support and prayers for our troops who are still in the area to neutralize the remaining Maute ISIS remnants who continously threaten the safety and well being of Meranaos," He added. 1DPAO / MCAG

DWDD: ENCOUNTER | NPA Terrorist Dead, Wounded Cohort Caught in an AFP Checkpoint

From Katropa DWDD-CRS Virtual RTV Facebook Page (Jan 28, 2019): ENCOUNTER | NPA Terrorist Dead, Wounded Cohort Caught in an AFP Checkpoint

MAGPET, Cotabato (DWDD) – A Communist Party of the Philippines – New People’s Army terrorist (CNT) was found dead in an encounter with the troops of 19th Infantry COMMANDO Battalion (19IB) in the vicinity of Sitio Kalo Kali, Barangay Bagumbayan, Magpet, Cotabato, around 9:30AM, while a wounded CNT was caught in an AFP checkpoint in Brgy Gubatan, of the same town, 1:00PM, January 27, 2019.

19IB launched an operation when a report was received from a concerned citizen that there are presence of armed terrorists in their community. Upon arrival in the area, the troops encountered 70 fully armed terrorists of Guerilla Front 53 (GF53) of Southern Mindanao Regional Command (SMRC).

“We had been receiving reports from concerned civilians about the presence of the terrorist NPAs in the area the reason why we launched our operations. This village was a former mass base of the terrorist group and they are trying to recover it by harassing populace and threatening former rebels to rejoin them in their failed armed struggle.” Colonel Ehrlich Noel Paraso, Commanding Officer of 19IB said.

The firefight lasted for 30 minutes after which the CNTs scampered to different directions. A male NPA terrorist was found dead in the encounter site while 1 - M14 rifle, 1 - M16 rifle with M203 granade launcher,1 - antipersonnel landmine, 5 - magazines with 208 rds of ammunition, 2 - NDF flags, 2 - NPA flags, 2 CPP flags, medical paraphernalia and subversive documents. Further, a soldier (name withheld for security purposes) was slightly wounded in his left shoulder.

On the other hand, a wounded NPA terrorist was apprehended in an ambulance passing through Gubatan patrol base. The rescue ambulance of Magpet responded to call from the barangay council of Brgy Noa stating that there was a person in need of medical attention.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of the dead NPA terrorist. We have coordinated with the local government unit and our PNP counterparts to help us find his family and also the family of the wounded terrorist for them to be informed of their whereabouts.” Brigadier General Larry Mojica, Commander of 901st Infantry Brigade said.

The cadaver was already turned over to the local officials for identification while the wounded CNT was brought to Amas Hospital in Kidapawan City and the injured soldier was already extracted for medical treatment as of press time.

“I commend the barangay council of Brgy Noa for their concern of the wounded NPA. I believe that wounded NPA terrorists have a right to receive proper medical attention. These people are only victims of CPP-NPANDF deception in the hinterland barangays. Members of the terrorist group have a choice, they can remain and accept their faith of dying in an encounter with the government troops, or they can go back to their families and return to the mainstream society. If they choose the latter, they can still avail of the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (ECLIP) being offered by the government. I am saying this because, units under 4th Infantry Division (4ID) will never stop going after these NPA terrorists in our area of responsibility. We will never stop until barangays will be cleared of CPP-NPA-NDF infiltration and we will never stop until communities and populace will experience the peace and progress that they are worthy of.” Major General Ronald Villanueva, Army’s 4ID Commander said. 4DPAO / MCAG

DWDD: RELENTLESS OPERATIONS | Three (3) Maute-IS captured in Lanao Del Sur AFP strike

From Katropa DWDD-CRS Virtual RTV Facebook Page (Jan 28, 2019): RELENTLESS OPERATIONS | Three (3) Maute-IS captured in Lanao Del Sur AFP strike

LANAO DEL SUR (DWDD) - Elements of the 103rd “Haribon” Infantry Brigade arrested three Maute-IS fighters late Friday, January 25, as the military continues its offensive on the Maute-IS remnants in Lanao del Sur....

Apprehended personalities were identified as Abdillah Bationg, Kalid Hadjinur and Casanur Hadjinur.

The arrest was made after locals tipped soldiers from the 55TH Infantry Battalion, 8th Light Armored Cavalry and 10th Scout Ranger Company of the terrorist’s presence.

The apprehension came after assaulting elements seized a Maute-IS camp in the hinterlands of Sultan Dumalondong, forcing the terrorists to retreat for survival.

“Nahiwa-hiwalay nalang kami ng mga kasama namin. Kanya kanya nalang muna kami at hindi nadin namin makayanan ang putok at bomba ng sundalo” (We parted ways with our comrades. We cannot withstand the intense firefight and bombings from the soldiers), the remnant said during a military debriefing.

“Malapit na nila kami maikutan kaya unti unti nang tumakas mga kasama namin. Wala narin yung mga lider namin kaya naisipan nalang naming umalis” (We were about to be encircled so our members have to withdraw. Our leaders are no where to be found so we made a run for it) he adds.

A Maute-IS returnee confirms all three as remnants of the Maute-IS group government forces have encountered a day earlier.

Earlier, Colonel Romeo S Brawner Jr, Commander of the 103rd Infantry Brigade, stated that there will be no let up in military operation to liberate Lanao del Sur from the Maute-IS remnants.

“We will take them out of their comfort zones until they have no other option but to die or return to the folds of the law” He expresses.

Brawner said that the local populace and local chief executives were key players in gathering intelligence information necessary to sustain combat operations.

“It is now the Meranaos and soldiers against the Maute-IS remnants. We are a formidable force to be reckoned with.” Col Brawner notes.

Accordingly, local chief executives are feeding “almost real-time” information on the whereabouts of the enemy.
“With the amount of support we are receiving from the populace, we are well on our way liberate Lanao del Sur from these terror groups.” – Col Brawner.

Major General Roseller G Murillo, commander of the 1st Infantry Division, commends the success of the recent operation.

“We are looking forward to have a peaceful Lanao. With the string of victories we are attaining in our campaign against these terrorists, we project that the threat posed by the Maute-IS remnants will be no more than that of a petty criminal.” He ends. 1DPAO / MCAG

PMA training ground for future leaders

From the Philippine News Agency (Jan 27, 2019): PMA training ground for future leaders

The Philippine Military Academy (PMA) has proven that the kind of leadership training it is giving to cadets is also applicable anywhere -- in the corporate world or in government bureaucracy outside the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

“We are trying to develop some more the character of our cadets,” which is just part of the four-year training that cadets undergo in the country’s premier military institution, said Lt. Col. Harry Baliaga Jr., PMA’s chief information officer.

He said the cadets’ training is anchored on the Camp Curriculum, which covers character development, academic development, military and physical development -- factors that mold would be leaders of the AFP and of the country.

The PMA, he said continues to produce leaders of character, who are not just good military officers but have become leaders in national government agencies.

Among the most prominent leaders of the country who hailed form PMA was former President Fidel Ramos, who started as a plebe cadet of PMA and went to the United States Military Academy (West Point) as an exchange cadet of the Philippines.

“Mga magagaling na military leaders ang nakikita sa ngayon, karamihan sa mga leaders ng government agencies are products of PMA, sila yung tumutulong sa nation building (we can see good military leaders who are products of PMA now heading government agencies, helping in nation building),” Baliaga said.

Seeing former cadets of PMA doing well and excelling in what they do after military life is not only a source of pride for the academy but also for the cadets, he said.

“We are proud, even the cadets realize that they were not wrong in choosing to study at PMA to be molded as future leaders of the country that is because they can see that the country’s leaders come from this institution.”

The PMA, he said provides a rigid military training to mold a person’s character and provides him the academic knowledge and training to handle situations, as well as prepare the person’s physique to hurdle what is outside the gates of the academy.

“Diyan naka angkla lahat ng pinapagawa sa kadete araw-araw para masiguro na paglabas nila, they are competent, and capable to lead organizations, and units in the field (everything that a cadet does in the academy is anchored on that to make sure that once they go out, they are competent and capable of leading an organization and their units in the field),” said Baliaga.

He said that values formation is embedded in all subjects and everything the cadets do. Those who handle the cadets’ training are also trained and provided with the skill to make them competent in providing the proper training of the country’s future leaders.

The official said that hazing or maltreatment has no place in the academy and in the formation of the cadets.

“It is part of the character development program of the academy where the cadets are molded to be ‘strong’, ‘sturdy’ without subjecting them to physical contact,” he added.

To train the physical well-being of the cadets, they have athletics composed of different sports including combat sports. They are also required to run 18.2 kilometers a week, which they have to honestly complete even without somebody looking at them, “and that is honesty being inculcated in their own system,” said Baliaga.

While there are others who have excelled, there is always “a rotten tomato in a basket”, the reason there are misguided former cadets who go the wrong way.

“That’s our goal, to guide and to direct these young cadets to become successful in their career but they just pass in the academy’s halls for four years,” the officer said.

Baliaga added: “we cannot claim that the bad attitudes some have were obtained in PMA. They just passed here in PMA, four years lang sila dito, nasa kanila kung gusto nilang i-absorb, isabuhay ang trainings na ibinibigay PMA sa kanila kasi the remaining years of their lives and the years before they enter, is with their families, with their community, in some other places so maybe masasabi natin na hindi nila masyadong nain-culcate ang values, culture ng PMA (they only stay here for four years and it is up to them if they will absorb and live by the teachings of PMA. Before they entered the academy and after, they are with their families, in their communities and in some other places. [Those who went the wrong way] maybe the values and the culture of PMA was not inculcated in them),” Baliaga said.

The PMA was set up as a military institution 120 years ago. Through the years, changes were implemented in the system to adapt to the time.

On January 27, some 315 cadets who have “completed” their plebe training -- where the core values of “courage, integrity and loyalty” are inculcated - will be recognized by the Cadet Corps Armed Forces of the Philippines (CCAFP) and the PMA administration.

They were part of the crème de la crème of over 15,000 who took the entrance examination in 2017, during which, 450 were formally received in June 1, 2018.

Baliaga said the recognition is an important stage in a cadet’s life as it signifies that completion of the most rigid part of the training and the shift from being a civilian to a military man.

The recognition rites is a conferment that the upper-class accepts the fourth-class, their actions, actuations and their behavior, including the posture of a “dignified military man” that they should be after having been subjected to pressures of the upper-class corps, academics and physical aspect in the first six months of their military life.

Meanwhile, former Sulu Gov. Abdusakur Tan has condemned the incident, which he called a "barbaric act".

“We condemn the barbaric act of certain individuals or group in the cathedral bombing this morning against the worshippers as they try to sow terror and we should never give in,” Tan said.

CAMP SIONGCO, Maguindanao -- Government forces seized a grenade launcher during the conduct of a law enforcement operation early Saturday in Lambayong, Sultan Kudarat, the Army said.

The soldiers quickly responded to a civilian report about a man in Barangay Didtaraz, Lambayong, who had been keeping a home-made M-79 grenade launcher.

Maj. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, commander of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division, said troops of the 2nd Mechanized Infantry Battalion retrieved the grenade launcher at 4:30 a.m. from the house of Noel Agduma Macho, a local resident.

“The aggressive drive against unlicensed guns is in response to President Duterte's campaign against criminality,” Sobejana said.

“The pro-active measures we have been conducting through clearing operation with the help of the communities’ preempted terroristic activities of criminals and extremist groups,” he added, as he commended Lt. Col. Alvin Iyog, 2nd Mechanized Infantry Battalion commander, for this accomplishment.

ILIGAN CITY -- Leaders of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) on Sunday went to Maigo, Lanao del Norte to lead a grand rally, which was aimed at gathering support for the inclusion of the six municipalities of the province in the new Bangsamoro government through the February 6 plebiscite.

Municipal mayors in the province, who support the BOL, also attended the event.

On Saturday evening, Murad Ebrahim, MILF chairperson, and other leaders of the group visited evacuation centers in Marawi City in solidarity and celebration of the ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL), and then went on to Lanao del Norte to campaign for the "Yes" vote, for its delayed plebiscite.

The party visited the Sarimanok Tent City to distribute relief packs and to thank the people who voted for the BOL's ratification.

In his speech, he said that he had always wanted to visit the evacuation sites of the internally displaced persons (IDPs) due to the Marawi Siege.

“You have already been living here (Sarimanok Evacuation Center) for more than a year already. You should have been a priority to be transferred to the Buganga transitory shelters (sic),” he said.

The Buganga transitory shelter will be the biggest transitory shelter in Marawi yet.

Murad and his party distributed some 300 relief packs, each consisting of one dozen sachets of instant coffee, a kilo of brown sugar, about three kilos of rice, a pack of biscuits, and four sachets of milk.

They also gave away relief packs to people in transitory shelter and evacuation sites in Marawi City’s Sagonsongan, Mipaga, and Bito Buadi Itowa and in the municipalities of Saguiaran, Baloi and Pantar.

Jonaira Taratingan, an evacuee in Sarimanok Tent City, is one of the recipients of MILF’s relief packs. She said she was thankful for receiving help and for seeing Murad in person.

The Sarimanok Tent City currently houses 107 families in Site 1 and 219 families in Site 2.

The Lanao del Norte plebiscite will determine whether its six towns will join the new Bangasamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), or will remain part of Lanao del Norte province.

The six towns are Tagoloan, Balo-i, Pantar, Munai, Tangcal, and Nunungan. In order to be part of BARMM, the province has to win a double-majority vote, which means the "Yes" votes should not only win in the six towns, but also throughout the Lanao del Norte province.

Members of the Dimaporo family that is holding major posts in the province earlier said they support BOL but will not allow the six towns to be part of BARMM.

"Ang importante, manalo tayo sa six municipalities dahil meron pa tayong pag-asa. Nagsakripisyo na tayo ng malaki para dito (It is important that we should win in the six municipalities because we still have hope. We have sacrificed a lot for this)," said Commissioner Mohagher Iqbal of the Bangsamoro Transition Commission.

MAIGO, Lanao del Norte -- The leadership of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) is conducting its own investigation on the two explosions that rocked the cathedral in Jolo, Sulu on Sunday morning.

MILF Chairman Hadji Murad Ebrahim, during his visit in Maigo, Lanao del Norte on Sunday to lead the grand rally for the inclusion of the six municipalities of the province to the new Bangsamoro government, said the explosion "is definitely not connected with the plebiscite because it is already done".

In his message to thousands of residents of the province, Murad said the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL) is for peace and it will protect not only the rights of Bangsamoro people but also the non-Bangsamoro people like the Christians and indigenous peoples.

"We are not dividing the people. In fact, we are uniting the Muslim and the Christian people," Murad said.

On February 6, more than 300,000 registered voters in Lanao del Norte will participate in the Bangsamoro plebiscite to decide if the municipalities of Pantar, Baloi, Tagoloan, Munai, Tangkal and Nunungan will be included in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

This town was attacked by MILF fighters in the years 2000, 2004 and 2008.

Recently, Maigo Mayor Rafael Rizalda and Abdullah Macapaar, also known as Commander Bravo, the leader of the MILF-Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces in North Western Mindanao Front, reconciled to strengthen their advocacy for the success of the Bangsamoro.

Rizalda is the first Christian mayor who declared support to BOL by visiting the MILF camp in Darapanan, North Cotabato ang Bravo's Camp Bilal in Barangay Tamparan, Munai, Lanao del Norte.

Meanwhile Presidential Peace Adviser Carlito Galvez Jr. condemned the bomb attack in Jolo, Sulu.

"We have come a long way in our journey to achieve enduring peace in Mindanao. Now is not the time to cower and be intimidated by such a selfish and cowardly deed," he said.

"Instead, let us show that we can work together and push through with our collective aspiration for a peaceful, united, and progressive Mindanao," Galvez added.

He also called on the public to stay calm and refrain from aggravating the situation by issuing speculations, particularly on social media, and wait for the proper authorities to complete the investigation.

Meanwhile, speaking to reporters while waiting for her flight back to Manila at the Laguindingan Airport in Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental, Vice President Ma. Leonor "Leni" Robredo said it is important that the culprits will be identified and arrested right away.

“What happened in Jolo is sad. We hope it won’t happen again. It is imperative that the perpetrators be identified and the victims be given justice. Otherwise, it will only embolden others to do the same attack,” she said.

The bombings happened just a few days after the plebiscite on the BOL in the core territories of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

But ARMM Gov. Mujiv Hataman, in a separate interview at the Laguindingan airport before he departed for Manila Sunday afternoon, said the attack was not related to the BOL.

“I can’t see the connection. First of all, the Abu Sayyaf or the IS have not manifested their stand on BOL whether they are for or against it,” Hataman said, but added that from the looks of it, only the Abu Sayyaf has the means and the capability to carry out such attack.

“Most likely, this is related to them (Abu Sayyaf),” the governor said, referring to the bombings.

For her part, House Speaker Gloria Arroyo urged the people of Jolo not to be dejected in spite of the bomb attacks.

“Please don’t lose heart. I’m sure the government will do everything to make things right,” she said.

Arroyo was also at the Laguindingan Airport Sunday afternoon to discuss with Civil Aviation Administration of the Philippines officials the possible expansion and upgrade of the airport’s facilities.

CAMP SIONGCO, Maguindanao -- A 15-year-old member of the Islamic State-inspired Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) yielded to authorities after being “enlightened” about the government’s program on rebels returning to the folds of the law.

The minor, identified only as "Tigre", remained hiding in the past two weeks despite the surrender of his relatives after years of eluding security forces who were sent to arrest them.

He said that the "lights coming from the solar lamp posts" convinced him to follow the path towards peace. The minor laid down his weapon late afternoon on Saturday.

"Bearing solar-powered flashlights and lamp posts, soldiers came to the village of my relatives to help them. I realized that they were not interested in killing us all," Tigre said in Maguindanaon dialect.

The surrender of Tigre happened an hour after soldiers of the Army’s 33rd Infantry Battalion installed solar lights in Pedtad village, a fishing village near the Liguasan Marsh.

Lt. Col. Harold Cabunoc, commander of the 33rd Infantry Battalion, personally received the rocket-propelled grenade launcher that was handed over by Tigre in Makainis village of Gen. Salipada K. Pendatun town in Maguindanao.

"You have made the right decision in laying down your weapon. There is no more reason to fight after the overwhelming victory of the Bangsamoro Organic Law ‘yes’ vote,” Cabunoc told the child-warrior shortly after his surrender.

Tigre belonged to the BIFF faction of Commander Mayo Gantong Bansil, whose group had been involved in atrocities against government troops in the area for the past five years.

“The influx of surrenderers reflect the high level of trust that we gained in Central Mindanao. With popular support, we will always prevail against any adversary,” Cabunoc said.

Major Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, the Army’s 6th Infantry Division commander, has directed subordinate commanders to sustain the gains on the ground.

“We must endeavor to reduce the armed groups through negotiations and focused military operations. This is our platform in turning the Liguasan Marsh from ‘terrorism to tourism’ and from a ‘battlefield to an oilfield’ area,” Sobejana said.

The 33rd IB has facilitated the surrender of 37 BIFF members, 205 communist rebels and sympathizers, and 41 drug syndicate members over the past two years.

MILF vows to help gov’t run after Jolo Church bombers

From the Philippine News Agency (Jan 28, 2019): MILF vows to help gov’t run after Jolo Church bombers

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) leadership condemned the Jolo Church bombing and offered to pursue the culprits behind the carnage.

Mohagher Iqbal, chair of the MILF peace panel, condemned what he described as a "senseless violence" that resulted in the death of at least 20 people, he said in the MILF online news.

"This criminal act has no place in our civilized society, especially that we are about to reap the fruits of our struggle with the ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law," he said.

During the January 21 plebiscite, majority of the people in Muslim Mindanao voted in favor of the law that will create a new Bangsamoro region with greater autonomy, but Jolo and the entire province of Sulu voted against the proposed measure.

"The MILF is ready to support efforts in the apprehension of the perpetrators of the senseless violence that occurred in a place of worship while people were attending the morning mass," Iqbal said.

MILF chairman Murad Ebrahim believed the bombing was not connected to the January 21 plebiscite. The whole of Mindanao remains under martial law after Congress approved its extension this year.

National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr. on Sunday said that the government is still trying to determine if the twin explosions in Jolo, Sulu is related to the recently ratified Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL).

“We have yet to establish if the two explosions are related to the all-important BOL,” Esperon told reporters in a message.

Esperon emphasized that the explosions took place after the plebiscite on the ratification of the law seeking to create a Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

“I have to add that the explosion comes after the success of the plebiscite for the BOL,” Esperon said.

He, meanwhile, described the suspects as “mass murderers”, stressing that the BOL is meant to end the secessionist narrative.

“The BOL signifies the end of war for secession. It stands for peace in Mindanao,” Esperon said.

“The perpetrators are mass murderers. They are extremist criminals. We will not allow them to spoil the preference of the people for peace,” he added, stressing that peace must prevail over war.

Esperon assured that security forces have tightened up the systems to secure Sulu and the rest of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

The bombing, which took place inside and outside a Roman Catholic church in Jolo, Sulu, left at least 20 people dead and several others wounded.

Malacañang earlier condemned the attack and expressed sympathies to the families of the victims.

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo vowed of government action to identify and punish the group behind the blast.

WESTMINCOM: Troops overrun Maute-IS lair, kill 3 remnants

From the Western Mindanao Command (WESTMINCOM) Website (Jan 25, 2019): Troops overrun Maute-IS lair, kill 3 remnants

Following the heavy skirmish yesterday, troops from the 103rd “Haribon” Infantry Brigade successfully overran an enemy stronghold in the hinterlands of Sultan Dumalondong, Lanao del Sur earlier today (January 25).

Recalling, troops from the 55th Infantry Battalion engaged with more or less 24 Maute remnants (also known as Dawlah Islamiyah-Lanao Group) under Abu Dar, the appointed leader of the DI-Lanao Group, in a fierce gun battle as the soldiers were approaching the remnants’ lair in Sultan Dumalondong, Lanao del Sur at 8:10am yesterday.

The firefight lasted for 10 hours and resulted to three (3) Maute-IS remnant killed, with more critically wounded, according to local sources, while three (3) government troops incurred injuries.

Sultan Dumalondong lies about 50 kilometers from Marawi City.

Lieutenant Colonel Ian Ignes, Commanding Officer of the 55IB said that they acted on the information given by the residents and the local chief executives.

“The enemy was completely taken by surprise as evident from the direction of their initial gunfire. We met fierce resistance as soon as we hit their final defensive lines,” he added.

The group has been hiding in the hinterlands of Lanao del Sur where they are well versed of the terrain.

“Despite the enemy’s advantage over the terrain, our troops were able to gain ground and managed to penetrate their defensive lines through timely and accurate supporting fires,” said Colonel Romeo S. Brawner Jr., Commander of the 103rd Infantry Brigade leading the assault since Wednesday night.

Artillery and close air support were immediately provided to the engaged troops sending the DI-Lanao remnants into their bunkers.

The group then scattered for survival, abandoning their stronghold due to the intense ground and air support.

Exploitation of the site reveals several defensive positions to include running trenches and fortified bunkers. A training camp was also found some hundred meters from the terrorists’ defensive lines.

Joint Task Force ZamPeLan Commander Major General Roseller Murillo said that the armed encounter is the result of the relentless campaign against the remaining members of the terrorist group.

“I commend the troops of the Joint Task Force ZamPeLan for this recent accomplishment,” said Lieutenant General Arnel B. Dela Vega, commander of the Western Mindanao Command.

“Rest assured that our intensified campaign against terrorism will not falter and we thank our partner stakeholders for their undying support to all our endeavors,” he added.

WESTMINCOM: Maute remnants surrender amid intensified ops in Lanao

From the Western Mindanao Command (WESTMINCOM) Website (Jan 25, 2019): Maute remnants surrender amid intensified ops in Lanao

Two Maute fighters, including a child warrior, surrendered to soldiers of the 49th “Good Samaritans” Infantry Battalion based in Butig, Lanao del Sur yesterday (January 24).

The surrender of Hussein, 17, and Ashlani, 34, came amid the focused military operations launched by the Joint Task Force ZamPeLan in the adjacent municipality of Sultan Dumalandong.

Maute brothers recruited and trained Hussein and Ashlani sometime in 2013 in Barangay Sandab, Butig.

Lieutenant Colonel Edgar Allan Villanueva, the commanding officer of the 49th Infantry Battalion, said the duo surrendered for fear that that they might be the next target of the military offensives.

“Takot kami na baka isunod nalang kami sa operation. Iniwan nalang kami ng mga leader pagkatapos nung encounter namin. Wala na rin kami matakbuhan kaya sumuko nalang kami,” said Ashlani.

The said surrender was facilitated by the Joint Ceasefire Monitoring Post and the local community.

“Out here, it is not just about fighting the enemy, but it is also about winning the hearts of the people,” added Lieutenant Colonel Villanueva.

“Nung una, natatakot kami na magsurrender dahil baka saktan nila kami, pero sabi naman sa amin ng mga tao na mabait naman daw ang mga sundalo sa area. Masaya kami dahil tinatrato kami ng maayos ng ating kasundaluhan,” said Ashlani.

“Ngayon na nagsurrender na kami, makakatulog na kami at ang pamilya namin ng maayos. Kung kailangan na panagutan namin ang ginawa namin, tatanggapin namin ang kapalaran namin,” added Ashlani.

Major General Roseller Murillo, the JTF ZamPeLan Commander, said, “We also ask the local populace for their trust, support, and prayers for our troops who continue to operate in ZamPeLan area to defeat the remaining Maute fighters that threaten the safety and well-being of Meranaos.”

“This will push us more to intensify our campaign against terrorists and prevent them from committing hostilities against fellow Meranaos,” said Lieutenant General Arnel Dela Vega, the commander of the Western Mindanao Command. “We are motivated to continue our offensives because we know that the people of Lanao del Sur are with us in the fight against terrorism.”

We also mourn the loss of our comrades in arms, but this will, all the more, motivate us to intensify our combat operations and crush terrorist groups in Sulu.

This is a resounding call on every God-fearing Suluanon to take part and to help the armed forces to defeat terrorism in Sulu.

Truly, there is no better solution but to work in harmony to bring the coveted peace in the province.

From the Western Mindanao Command (WESTMINCOM) Website (Jan 27, 2019): High-powered firearm seized by troops in Sultan Kudarat

Military troops seized a high-powered firearm in a clearing operation launched in the town of Lambayong, Sultan Kudarat on January 26.

Soldiers of the 2nd Mechanized Infantry Battalion acted upon a report from a resident of Barangay Didtaraz in said town, yielding to the seizure of an M79 Grenade Launcher with ammunition belonging to Noel Agduma Macho.

Macho underwent a custodial debriefing facilitated by the troops. Soldiers turned him over to the police for disposition and filing of cases.

“The aggressive drive against unlicensed guns is in response to the campaign of President Rodrigo Duterte against criminality,” said Major General Cirilito Sobejana, the commander of the Joint Task Force Central.

“The pro-active measures we have been conducting through our clearing operations and the assistance of the communities preempted the terroristic activities of criminals and extremist groups,” he added.

Major General Sobejana commended Lieutenant Colonel Alvin Iyog, the commanding officer of the 2nd Mechanized Infantry Battalion, and the troops for the accomplishment in the campaign against the proliferation of loose firearms.

“We continue to work for the demilitarization of armed groups in Central Mindanao by sustaining our campaign against loose firearms and by intensifying our security operations on the ground. This recent accomplishment of the JTF Central all indicates that our campaign is on the right track,” said Lieutenant General Arnel Dela Vega, the commander of the Western Mindanao Command.

“As we sustain our momentum, we encourage the people of Maguindanao to take steps and to support our campaign to remove all tools and implements that propagate lawless violence in Mindanao,” he added.
