Around 8:15am today, the people of Jolo, especially the Catholic brethren, were distraught by the twin explosion that occurred inside and at the parking area of the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cathedral in Barangay Walled City, Jolo, Sulu.



Said incident resulted in 100 casualties, 18 deaths (12 Civilians, 5 AFP, 1 PCG) and 82 wounded (65 Civilians, 15 AFP, 2 PCG), majority of whom are innocent civilians who were inside the church to attend the regular Sunday mass at the Cathedral.


As of 6pm today, 18 casualties, including 15 civilians, 2 coast guards, and 1 soldier, were evacuated from Sulu to Zamboanga City through air ambulance.



At around 6:48pm, C-130 arrived at the Edwin Andrews Air Base bringing the remains of 5 soldiers and 3 civilians.

Casualty evacuation from Jolo to Zamboanga City continues.

Based on the CCTV footage recovered by authorities, the Ajang-Ajang group perpetrated the said bombing incident.

Ajang-Ajang is a notorious group linked to the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) in the province of Sulu.

The group has been held responsible for killings of law enforcers, particularly soldiers and policemen in Jolo. They are also blamed for other heinous crimes in the area.
