Two communist New People’s Army (NPA) rebels were arrested by government forces while fleeing Zamboanga del Sur, officials said Tuesday.
Brig. Gen. Leonel Nicolas, 102nd Infantry Brigade commander, said Jaymar Balaas Bellano and Gemma Donsalo Ayas were apprehended around 4:30 p.m. Monday in Midsalip, Zamboanga del Sur.
They were intercepted by the Army's 53rd Infantry Battalion and the police while at a checkpoint hours after a firefight between government forces and in Barangay Marangan, Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur.
Nicolas said the 10:30 a.m. clash resulted in the death of a rebel, adding that the pair escaped from the encounter site bringing along with them assorted war materials, supplies, and garments.
Bellano and Ayas were turned over to the police in Midsalip for proper disposition and filing of appropriate charges, the Army official said.
Maj. Gen. Generoso Ponio, commander of the Army's 1st Infantry Division, said the arrest of the rebels was a result of their "relentlessly focused and civil-military operations to eradicate all forms of threat in the region."
