2 ASG bandits surrender in Sulu

From the Philippine News Agency (Sep 22, 2020): 2 ASG bandits surrender in Sulu (By Teofilo Garcia, Jr.)

Two members of the Daesh-inspired Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) have surrendered one after the other as focused military operations continue against them in Sulu province, military officials announced Tuesday.

Brig. Gen. William Gonzales, 11th Infantry Division commander,
identified the ASG surrenderers as Mohmor Badderi, 27; and Alih Jumsah, 41.

Gonzales, who is also the Joint Task Force (JTF) Sulu commander, said that Badderi, a resident of Patikul, Sulu, surrendered Monday to Lt. Col. Wilfredo Borgonia, commander of the 35th Infantry Battalion.

Gonzales said that Badderi was later turned over to Col. Giovanni Franza, Metro Jolo Task Group commander, for his possible enrolment to the localized social integration program.

Franza’s command has jurisdiction over the provincial capital of Jolo and the towns of Indanan, Parang, Maimbung, Patikul, and Talipao.

Brig. Gen. Ignatius Patrimonio, commander of the 1102nd Infantry Brigade, said that Jumsah, a resident of Maimbung, Sulu, surrendered to Lt. Col. Alex Gagula, commander of the 100th Infantry Battalion.

Jumsah told the military officials that he decided to return to the fold of the law to be able to live a peaceful life with his family.

Jumsah said he was also enticed by the livelihood program offered for the ASG surrenderers by the municipal government of Maimbung.

“The strength of the local terrorist group is dwindling as a result of the relentless efforts of the JTF Sulu and LGU (Local Government Unit) Sulu to end the local armed conflict in the province,” he said.

He is optimistic that the Daesh-inspired ASG will be decimated the soonest possible time with the continued conduct of focused military operations.

“I urge the people of Sulu to be vigilant most especially in Jolo for the reason that the declining group will resort to terror acts to project their strength,” Gonzales added.

The surrender of Badderi and Jumsah brought the number to 12 of ASG bandits who surrendered to the government since Sept. 1.

Lt. Gen. Corleto Vinluan Jr., commander of the Western Mindanao Command, commended JTF Sulu troops for its numerous accomplishments.
