NEGROS ORIENTAL, Sept. 21 (PIA) -- The joint combat clearing operations of the Philippine Army’s 94th and 11th Infantry Battalions have encountered at least 12 suspected members of the communist-led New People’s Army Thursday at the boundary of Ayungon, Negros Oriental and Kabankalan, Negros Occidental.

According to Community Military Officer Maj. Kadaffy TawanTawan of 302nd Infantry Brigade (IB), the 25-minute gun battle resulted in the seizure of one M16 rifle, cal.45 pistol, magnum 357 pistol each, four rifle grenades, one hand grenade, 15 assorted magazines with ammunitions, five backpacks, and three bandoliers.

The troops also recovered three cell phones, solar panel, medicines and medical equipment/paraphernalia, subversive documents, and personal belongings.

Tawan-Tawan said no one was hurt among the soldiers.

Battalion Commander LtC. Angelo Guzman of 94th IB said persistent reports from the locals reaching the Battalion reveal that a group of CNTs (communist NPA terrorist) were conducting recruitment activities in the mountainous area of Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental and the adjacent municipality of Ayungon, Negros Oriental, thus, a combat clearing operation was conducted.

Brigadier General Noel Baluyan of the 302nd IB lauded the accomplishment of the troops.

He attributed the positive result to the timely information from the locals and the decisive and effective leadership of the ground commanders.

"The 302 Brigade and its subordinate units will conduct relentless combat operations against the CNTs in Central and Southern Negros in order for peace and development to prosper," said Baluyan.

"I encourage the CNTs to surrender and return to the mainstream society rather than risking facing the consequences of an encounter with the full might of the military," he added. (jct/PIA7 Negros Oriental)
