Posted to the Mindanao Examiner (Sep 22, 2020): 2 Sayyafs surrender in Sulu
Two Abu Sayyaf militants surrendered separately to the Philippine Army in the southern province of Sulu, officials said Tuesday.Philippine military photos released to the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner show the 2 Abu Sayyaf terrorists who surrendered in Sulu province.
Officials said Mahmor Badderi, 27, yielded to Lt. Col. Wilfredo Borgonia, commander of the 35th Infantry Battalion; and 41-year old Ali Jumsah surrendered to Brig. Gen. Ignatius Patrimonio, who heads the 1102nd Infantry Brigade.
The Western Mindanao Command confirmed the surrender of the duo, saying the militants, whose notorious group is largely blamed for the spate of terror attacks in Sulu, may be enrolled in the localized social integration program.
Patrimonio said Jumsah decided to return to the fold of the law so he can go back to mainstream society and be with his family. “He was also enticed by the livelihood program offered for the returnees by the local government of Maimbung,” he said.
This was also echoed by Brig. Gen. William Gonzales, commander of the anti-terror Joint Task Force Sulu, saying: “The strength of the local terrorist group is dwindling as a result of the relentless efforts of the JTF Sulu and local governments to end the local armed conflict in the province.”
“With the continued conduct of focused military operations, I am optimistic that the terror group will be decimated the soonest possible time. I urge the people of Sulu to be vigilant, most especially in Jolo (town) for the reason that the declining (number of the Abu Sayyaf) group will resort to terror acts to project their strength,” Gonzales added.
He said since early this month, 13 Abu Sayyaf members have surrendered to the military, including Badderi and Jumsah.
Lt. Gen. Corleto Vinluan Jr., chief of the Western Mindanao Command, praised the surrender of the militants and commended Gonzales for his peace efforts in Sulu. “I would like to commend the troops of JTF Sulu for the numerous accomplishments under the leadership of Brig. Gen. William Gonzales. Carry on your good work with passion and enthusiasm,” he said.
Just last week, three soldiers were wounded in a 45-minute battle with about over a dozen Abu Sayyaf fighters in the village of Bungkaong in Patikul town.
And in August, two women - one of them an Indonesian militant - blew themselves near a military truck and killed several soldiers and civilians, and left scores of villagers wounded in what the military claimed was the handiwork of the Abu Sayyaf, whose leaders pledged allegiance to ISIS. The notorious group claimed responsibility for the blasts. (Mindanao Examiner)
