MILF: Sibugay Bangsamoro Association for Development conducts Islamic Symposium for Moro Women

The Sibugay Bangsamoro Association for Development (SBMAD) conducted a one-day Islamic Symposium for Moro Women Professionals with the theme “Empowering Potential Bangsamoro Women towards Peace and Development” at Alnempco Reception Hall, Poblacion, Alicia, Zamboanga Sibugay on March 19. 2016.

The activity was the first of its kind in Alicia where the participants were mostly Moro Public school teachers who came all the way from other municipalities of Zamboanga-Sibugay province.

Mr. Darwin Matindo, SBMAD Vice President together with some officers facilitated the program.

Aside from enhancing the participants understanding of Islam and the concept of Women empowerment, the activity also aims to update the participants on the peace process between the Philippine Government (GPH) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

The resource persons were ulama (Islamic Scholars) and peace advocates led by Sheikh Abbas Abdulrazak from Mahad Ibno Uthaimin Islamic Institute, Kabasalan, Zamboanga-Sibugay and Tirso S. Tahir from the Bangsamoro Leadership and Management Institute (BLMI).

As a gesture of support, the Mayor of Alicia Municipality, Zamboanga- Sibugay, Haji Yashier S. Musa attended the forum as special guest.

In his welcome address, Ismael I. Mamiscal, SBMAD President expressed his warm appreciation to Alicia Mayor Musa for recognizing the peace and development initiatives embarked on by SBMAD, to the participants and resource persons who came all the way to attend the program.  He expects more viable activities will be conducted by SBMAD in coming months.

Mayor Musa in his message said that “He was grateful to SBMAD for their initiatives in coming up with the activity which he described as very productive and informative where the Moro public school teachers were given the opportunity to ask and clarify some very important issues.

“I am very grateful to the organizers for making this initiative, This is the first of its kind held in our town. I did not expect the organizers to come up with this noble program in our municipality. I am hoping that more similar activities be realized by SBMAD”, Mayor Musa said.

The topic on “The Principles of Muslim women in Islam” was delivered by Sheikh Saeed Hasim, who graduated from Islamic University Madinah Munawwarah, College of Islamic Shariah.

Sheikh Hasim emphasized the Principles of Muslim Women and the concept of women empowerment in Islamic perspective.

The second lecturer was Mr. Tirso S. Tahir, BLMI Research Officer. The centerpiece of his power point presentation was “Empowering the Bangsamoro Women toward Peace and Development”.

“It is imperative upon every Bangsamoro people to know the Bangsamoro narratives, their history as well as their legitimate struggle, and you are in the right position to relate that narratives to your students”, Tahir said.

He also updated the participants on GPH-MILF Peace process and the reasons behind the non-passage of the draft The BBL.

Sheikh Abdulrajak Abbas, who is a graduate of Mutah University, Jordan, College of Islamic Guidance (Da’wah) and the President of Association for Arabic Education and Development lectured on the “Third Pillar of Islam” (Zakat).

He emphasized the fundamental principles of Zakat, its mode of application and the wisdom behind it. “Paying Zakat is an obligation of every abled- Muslims as it is compulsory as Prayer”, Sheikh Abbas stressed.

In the open forum, questions and important issues were answered and clarified.

Ustadz Gomama Mohammad delivered the closing message. He appealed to Moro professionals to share their part in promoting the gains of the peace process and to empower their respective communities not just their students in peace-building endeavor.

He also cited how the early Muslim women participated in building Islamic empire since time immemorial.
