Troopers of the 62nd Infantry Battalion shot and killed two
suspected lawless elements and wounded three others during an encounter in Cadiz City ,
Negros Occidental early Monday morning.
Lt. Col. Ray Tiongson, 3rd Infantry Division public affairs
office chief, said the clash took place at 4:30 a.m. at Barangay Bangquerohan.
Government troops were in the area after receiving reports
from barangay officials and residents regarding the presence of heavily-armed
men, indiscriminately firing their weapons in the community.
"We responded upon the request of the barangay
officials and our troops together with the barangay tanods were fired upon by
these armed elements which prompted us to give warning shots. However, the
armed group continued firing and exchange of fire ensued," 62nd
Infantry Battalion commander Lt. Col. Arnel Cabugon said.
After the firefight, two of the suspects were found dead
while three others were injured.
Troops also recovered a homemade .22 caliber rifle loaded
with 5.56-mm ammunition.
The bodies of the slain individuals were immediately taken
to a Cadiz
funeral parlor for proper disposition while the three wounded were immediately
brought to the nearest hospital for treatment.
Identities of the slain and wounded individuals are being determined.
