From the Philippine News Agency (Mar 21): 2 lawless elements killed, 3 wounded in Negros Occidental clash

Troopers of the 62nd Infantry Battalion shot and killed two suspected lawless elements and wounded three others during an encounter in Cadiz City, Negros Occidental early Monday morning.

Lt. Col. Ray Tiongson, 3rd Infantry Division public affairs office chief, said the clash took place at 4:30 a.m. at Barangay Bangquerohan.

Government troops were in the area after receiving reports from barangay officials and residents regarding the presence of heavily-armed men, indiscriminately firing their weapons in the community.

"We responded upon the request of the barangay officials and our troops together with the barangay tanods were fired upon by these armed elements which prompted us to give warning shots. However, the armed group continued firing and exchange of fire ensued," 62nd Infantry Battalion commander Lt. Col. Arnel Cabugon said.

After the firefight, two of the suspects were found dead while three others were injured.

Troops also recovered a homemade .22 caliber rifle loaded with 5.56-mm ammunition.

The bodies of the slain individuals were immediately taken to a Cadiz funeral parlor for proper disposition while the three wounded were immediately brought to the nearest hospital for treatment.

Identities of the slain and wounded individuals are being determined.
