The military arrested 12 persons, seven of them minors,
after a 20-minute firefight with the communist guerrillas in Bukidnon, the
military reported Monday.
Capt. Norman M. Tagros, the spokesperson of the army’s 8th
Infantry Battalion (8IB), said that the armed encounter took place in the
hinterland village
of Delapa in Quezon,
Bukidnon.
Tagros said that the government troopers were conducting
patrols in the area when fired upon by the communist New People’s Army (NPA),
which resulted in the 20-minute firefight.
“The government troopers did not suffer casualties. However,
an AK-47 assault rifle with ammunition and magazines were recovered from the
encounter site together with the 12 persons,” Tagros said.
He said that the military has been conducting regular patrol
in various areas in Bukidnon where the presence of armed group had been
reported to secure the area.
“The patrol is a preemptive measure in response to various
cases involving the burning of heavy equipment rented by multi-national
companies in Bukidnon, particularly in the maintenance of farm plantations,”
Tagro said.
He said that the five adults who were nabbed in the
encounter site would be charged with illegal possession of firearms and
ammunition, frustrated murder, and violation of the election gun ban.
Tagros said that the seven minors were turned over to the
provincial social welfare department for proper disposal.
