Based on the report submitted by 102nd Infantry Brigade Commander Brig. Gen. Leonel Nicolas to WestMinCom Commander Lt. Gen. Corleto Vinluan, Jr., a former secretary of the communist NPA terrorist group was killed in an encounter with the government forces in the early evening of November 13, 2020.

Lt. Gen. Vinluan, Jr. said, “Operating troops of the 44th Infantry Battalion were conducting combat operations when they encountered more or less 10 armed fighters of the Guerilla Front Flex A, Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee (WMRPC) at Purok 2, Barangay ZNAC, Tampilisan, Zamboanga del Norte at 6:15 p.m.”

“An exchange of gunfire ensued for 45 minutes after which the militants withdrew,” Lt. Gen. Vinluan, Jr. added.

Said encounter resulted in the death of one enemy which was identified as Leonardo Nabong, a.k.a. Otik/Berto/Bonie, the former secretary and the current 1st Deputy Secretary of the WMRPC.

“Nabong was also an Executive Committee member of the Komisyon Mindanao (KOMMID) who has existing warrants of arrest for multiple murder with quadruple frustrated murder and damage to government property, and rebellion issued by the Regional Trial Court 10th Judicial Region Branch 36 in Calamba, Misamis Occidental with a reward of PHP 6,150,000.00,” said Brig. Gen. Nicolas.

While scouring the encounter site, troops recovered the remains of Nabong and war materiel including one M14 rifle, four M16A1 Elisco, one M203 Grenade Launcher, ten long and four short magazines for M16 rifle, six rounds live ammunition of 40mm.

“The identity of the killed NPA leader was confirmed by former rebels who are currently participating in our livelihood programs,” Brig. Gen. Nicolas added.

As of this report, pursuit and blockade are being conducted by the operating troops to thwart the extrication of the militants.

“We will continue to conduct focused military operations and maximize intelligence monitoring to disallow the menaces of society to thrive in the communities in our area of operation,” said Maj. Gen. Generoso Ponio, JTF ZamPeLan Commander.

Meanwhile, Lt. Gen. Vinluan, Jr. said that this is a positive result of the military’s continued engagements with the local government units and the communities.

“Let us continue to work together to win over any threat that hinders peace and progress in the communities,” the commander added.
