An official of the Philippine Army in Agusan del Norte lauded on Friday the contribution of Citizens Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) members in the government’s fight against communist insurgency.

“Our CAFGUs provide a vital role in our anti-insurgency efforts, especially in supporting our troops in the countryside,” said Lt. Col. Julius Cesar C. Paulo, commander of the Army's 23rd Infantry Battalion, as he welcomed the 50 CAFGU members on Friday after completing their 15-day refresher training.

“I believe that CAFGUs are our unsung heroes. They offer their lives to protect our nation, and sometimes, most people do not see their efforts,” Paulo said.

He pointed out that the CAFGUs assigned at the unit are familiar with the terrain and the language in their communities in Agusan del Norte.

The 50 CAFGU members are residents from different villages in Las Nieves, Agusan del Norte, and are providing support to the different patrol bases in the area.

“They really helped the unit a lot in countering the threats from the Communist New People’s Army (NPA) Terrorist (CNT),” Paulo said. “I am glad that these CAFGU members never get tired of protecting their community against the lawless CNTs."

He also recognized the role of the CAFGUs in winning back some barangays in Las Nieves town that were influenced by the NPA for years, particularly Barangay Lawan-lawan.

“Barangay Lawan-lawan was once a guerilla base of the CNTs but was won over by the government and became peaceful after the residents openly denounced and withdrawn their support to the communist movement,” Paulo said.

1Lt. Roel T. Maglalang, 23IB civil-military operations officer, added that the 50 CAFGU members took their refresher training in Barangay Lawan-lawan from October 23 to November 7 this year.

“The training was supported by the local government of Las Nieves and the leaders of the Indigenous Peoples in the province headed by Datu Bawang Eddie S. Ampiyawan, the Indigenous People Mandatory Representative (IPMR) of Agusan del Norte,” Maglalang said.

He said the refresher training allowed the CAFGU members to hone their knowledge and fighting skills.
