A field unit of the Army Reserve Command (ARESCOM) on Monday opened the summer training program for Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) of cadet officers from the provinces of Central Visayas, the command’s senior official in the region said.

Col. Gerry Borja, 7th Regional Community Defense Group (7RCDG) commander, said 182 cadets from different schools in Central Visayas gathered at Camp Lapu-Lapu here to comprise the first batch of participants in a month-long ROTC Summer Camp Training (RSCT).

Another batch of 130 cadets will join in the second batch of RSCT, he said.

The one-month RSCT will be followed by Advance ROTC Academic Phase Training (ARAPT).

The summer camp opened at the 53rd Engineer Brigade social hall inside the military reservation here, Borja said.

“We can see the passion of these cadets to learn new things during this extended summer training of the ROTC,” he said.

According to Borja, the RSCT is split into two training batches due to unsynchronized opening of classes of schools this year.

There are schools that will open their first semester in June, while some in August. Students whose schools did not change the schedule of opening of classes can participate in the first batch, while the others whose schools’ opening is in August, will take the second batch.

“Our ROTC summer training has been affected with the unsynchronized opening of classes. But we can adjust. Inasmuch as we would like to accommodate them all, our training fund is allocated only for one summer training, but we will also adjust with our budgeting so that we can accommodate them all,” he told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) in an interview.

In his message during the opening ceremony, Lt. Col. Antonio Esmero, 701st Ready Reserve Battalion commander, told the cadets to “go out of their comfort zone and experience the real life in the field”.

“Some will grow old, but some will not grow up. The only way of letting you grow up is to let you out of your comfort zone,” he said.

The summer camp will be a good avenue to discover and temper the cadets’ true attitude, he said.

The training staff would not want the summer camp trainees to suffer, however, and the country wants them to be prepared, he added.

Esmero also quoted 7RCDG Adjutant Major Frederick Marquez as saying that the cadets are expected to learn in the summer camp the values of being a leader.

“Leadership does not only mean giving orders, but also going along with the subordinates in accomplishing the missions,” he added.

Borja said around 36 public and private universities and colleges participated in the regional annual administrative and tactical inspections (RAATI) last month, to assess their ROTC units’ proficiency in administrative and military tactics.
