AN IMPROVISED explosive device was detected inside a bag left few meters away from a military detachment in Lasang, Bunawan District.

Task Force Davao commander Colonel Nolasco Mempin said that around 6 a.m. Thursday, February 8, a squad of Task Group Lawin immediately proceeded to the area to verify the reports of an unattended baggage located just 1.2 kilometer away from the post.

After the K9 dog indicated positive reaction upon dispatch, the disposal team immediately conducted safety procedure to secure the IED.

“The said item was safely recovered and is now in the possession of TFD EOD/K9 for proper disposition,” he said.

Mempin said the IED is similar to the usual weapons of the New People’s Army (NPA) when conducting ambuscade or attacks against authorities.

They are conducting investigation on the identity of the suspect who left the IED.

“We are still determining the possible motive but since it is an IED which the NPA uses, maybe it is intended for our uniformed personnel,” he said.

Mempin thanked the community for reporting to their office the presence of unattended baggage, which prevented the worst case scenario. He then urged the public to cooperate with them and report to their office any suspicious baggage or activities in their areas.

“We seek the continued support and cooperation by being vigilant and alert and report immediately any suspicious item or person so that we can promptly respond and validate their info given to us,” Mempin said.
