The Bienvenido Valleber Command of the New People's Army (NPA) in Palawan admitted attacking the Roxas municipal police station on Wednesday and accused police of harassing small-scale miners in the area. In a statement, Samuel Caballero, spokesperson of the National Democratic Front-Palawan, accused local police of harassing small-scale gold miners in the village of Iraan, such as confiscating their mining equipment and extorting from the miners. "Ang ginagawang pagkuha sa mga makina na siyang pinagkabuhayan ng maliliit na maggiginto ay katumbas ng pag-alis ng kanilang kabuhayan at pagpatay na mismo ng kanilang pamilya, na wala namang alternatiboang lokal na pamahalaan para sa naghihikahos na mamamayan," Caballero said in the statement. [The confiscation of the small-scale miners' machine is tantamount to stripping them of their livelihood and killing their families amid the lack of alternative source of income for the poor people from the local government.] Caballero also accused the local police of entering the miners' area purportedly to conduct an arrest then demanding money for their release.
Sought for comment, Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesman Chief Superintendent Generoso Cerbo Jr. said they are investigating thea ccusations made by the NPA against authorities in Roxas and also reports that the chief of police was not in the station at the time of the raid. The PNP is also reviewing its camp defense plan to prevent another attack on its police stations. A policeman was killed and another was injured when the rebels, posing as Marines, attacked the Roxas police station Wednesday morning.
