Two Army soldiers and two suspected communist rebels were killed following a clash in Negros Occidental Thursday morning, a regional military spokesman said. Capt. Anacito Naz, spokesman for the Army's 302nd Brigade, said about 8 a.m., operating elements of the 11th Infantry Battalion were fired upon by an undetermined number of New People's Army rebels at Sitio Mapaho-paho in San Agustin village in Isabela town. At the time, the troops were responding to information from civilians about the presence of armed men in the area, which turned out to be a rebel camp. Four other soldiers were wounded in the clash, which lasted for about three hours, Naz said. “They [government troops] overran the camp, it was where we recovered two of their (rebels) [fatalities],” he said. The government casualties were airlifted by two UH-1H helicopters. The operating troops also recovered a cal. 45 pistol with two magazines, five tents, eight backpacks with personal belongings, and rebel documents, said Lt. Col. Christopher Tampus, Armed Forces Central Command spokesman.
