Bancasi, Butuan City – The 402nd Infantry (Stingers) Brigade of the Philippine Army joined the celebration of the 22nd Indigenous People Rights Act (IPRA) Day Celebration with a theme “Strengthening Future Leadership and Management of Ancestral Domains: Entrusting the IP Youths” held at LMX Convention Center, Brgy Bancasi, Butuan City today, October 16, 2019.

Col Maurito L Licudine, Commander of the 402nd Brigade and the highest Army Unit Commander in Caraga, citing the value of the celebration and significance of the IPs as one of the vital piece in attaining long and lasting peace in the region, attended the celebration showcasing the Brigade’s support to the IPs role in nation building, its talent and culture.

With him were personnel of the 23IB under the operational control of the 402nd Brigade who provided free haircut services to more than fifty (50) IPs. Partner stakeholders were also present that also gave free basic services. TESDA Caraga offered Free Massage, DOH Caraga conducted Free Medical and Dental Check-Up and distributed Medicines while the Department of Agriculture (DA) and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) conducted profiling and distribution of Seeds to the IP participants.

Director Ferdausi S Cerna, the Regional Director of the National Commission of Indigenous People (NCIP) Caraga spearheaded the celebration attended by more than five hundred (500) IPs coming from the different tribes in Caraga namely: Manobo, Higaonon, Mamanwa, Talaandig, Banwa-on and Mandaya. He said “As we celebrate the 22nd IPRA celebration where we give great emphasis on the youth’s role to manage and keep the Ancestral Domain, we, the present leaders should be steadfast in keeping our culture, customs and traditions. We could only remain free in our lands if we will remain brave in defending it.”

Meanwhile, Col Licudine in his statement said, “Your Army supports and recognizes the inherent right of IPs to self-governance and self-determination and respects the integrity of their values, practices and institutions. We also recognize the IP leaders who continuously advocate peace and stand their ground to defend their people and shun away the influence of the CPP-NPA Terrorist (CNT) in their communities.”

“We call on every IP brothers and sisters to unite with us, your Army, in creating an environment where all our children can live in peace and fulfill their dream of prosperity in life. Let us always be vigilant and alert from the CNT’s scheme of manipulation and deception. We must resist the threat as their ploy to continuously control your people,” Col Licudine added.
