DUMAGUETE CITY – The 303rd Infantry Brigade of the Philippine Army has cited a total of 29 soldiers of the 94th Infantry Battalion (94IB) in Negros Oriental for their “exemplary actions” during encounters with New People’s Army (NPA) insurgents in the province.
Brig. Gen. Benedict Arevalo, 303rd Infantry Brigade Commander, pinned the Military Commendation Medals during awarding rites Wednesday in Barangay Tambo, Ayungon in Negros Oriental, a statement from the brigade said.
The 94IB soldiers, who were given recognition, clashed with more or less 20 suspected NPA guerillas in Sitio Cabangahan in Barangay Bantolinao, Manjuyod town last Oct. 3.
The troops recovered “war materials” to include an improvised anti-personnel mine, parts of an M16 rifle that were destroyed during the encounter, a handheld radio, one AM radio, two cellular phones, electrical wire, two backpacks, and other items.
“Our mission is simple. We must be loved by the people and feared by the enemy. We need to hit our enemy before they hit us. That’s why we have to be victorious in our encounters,” Arevalo, said in his message.
He said the medals symbolize the bravery of the soldiers and giving them such recognition show appreciation for “such efforts because a person who is appreciated will do more than what is expected".
This is the first time for the 94IB troops, headed Lt. Col. Randy Pagunuran, to receive medals from Arevalo since the battalion was placed under the operational control of the 303rd Brigade last July 1st.
