SOCORRO, Oriental Mindoro -- At least three police officers of Pinamalayan Police Station and a village chief were injured in an ambush while on their way to Calapan for a radio interview Tuesday morning.
Barangay Pasi 2 chair Danilo Caspe said the police officers and the village chair onboard a mobile patrol vehicle were passing along the Strong Republic Nautical Highway (SRNH) in Barangay Pasi 2 when still unidentified suspects fired at them.
Caspe said an improvised bomb exploded near the roadside, toppling some banana plants, while the patrol vehicle was hit by shrapnel and riddled with bullets.
He said Barangay Palayan captain Noli dela Cruz, who was one of the injured, told him there was a loud explosion followed by a burst of gunfire.
Onboard the mobile patrol were dela Cruz, Capt. Ruelito R. Magtibay, Pinamalayan station’s deputy chief of police; Chief M/Sgt. Ivan Fortus, Senior M/Sgt. Irene M. Lazo, Cpl. Ivy Carmona, and the driver Pat. Raquel Generoso, all from Pinamalayan, Oriental Mindoro.
Police said the victims were brought to the Medical Mission Group Hospital in Calapan City.
Police Regional Office-Mimaropa regional director, Lt. Col. Socrates Faltado said Fortus, Lazo, Carmona and dela Cruz were wounded during the incident.
Faltado, who visited the victims, said as of posting time, a police officer was still in the operating room while two others and the barangay captain are already in stable condition.
