Two rebels were killed while two police officers were wounded after an estimated 60 New People's Army (NPA) fighters overrun the Alegria Municipal Police Station in Surigao Del Norte Thursday afternoon.
1st Lt. Joe Patrick Martinez, 402nd Infantry Brigade civil-military operations officer, said the incident took place 3 p.m.
He added that the rebels were all members of the NPA Guerilla Front 16.
The rebels made their attack aboard a cargo truck, he added.
The firefight lasted for 30 minutes and resulted in the overrunning of the police station.
The rebels took one M-14 automatic rifle, four M-16 rifles, and one shotgun before escaping towards the direction of Barangays Siringan and Bliss, both of Kitcharao town, Agusan Del Norte.
Two rebels were killed in the incident while an AK-47 automatic rifle was captured.
Two police officers were hurt in the encounter.
Troopers from 30th Infantry Battalion immediately reinforced the police and encountered an estimated 15 NPA fighters at the vicinity of Barangay Pungtod, Alegria town, Surigao Del Norte.
The firefight lasted for about 10 minutes after which the rebels quickly retreated to northward direction.
