ILOILO CITY—The New People’s Army (NPA) once again attacked members belonging to a breakaway group in Iloilo province that has been holding peace negotiations with the government.
Captain Cenon Pancito III, spokesperson of the Philippine Army’s Third Infantry Division (3ID), said the latest attack against the Revolutionary Proletarian Army-Alex Boncayao Brigade (RPA-ABB) occurred Wednesday in Alimodian town.
The NPA ambushed 16 RPA-ABB members in Cunsad village after reportedly detonating an improvised explosive device. The RPA-ABB members fired back until the NPA rebels scampered.
Last Sunday, seven NPA rebels also attacked the RPA-ABB members in San Joaquin town. That attack wounded 34-year-old Ramie Cataluña.
For the 3ID, the successive attacks by the NPA was a strong indication that the armed group of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) was against the RPA-ABB’s continuous partnership with the government to bring back peace.
“The NPA wants to derail the process by terrorizing the RPA-ABB,” Pancito noted.
Meanwhile, five former NPA rebels received aid Thursday under the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP).
Each rebel returnee received P15,000 cash aid and P60,000 livelihood assistance in a ceremonial turnover led by Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr., Philippine Army 301st Infantry Brigade (301 IB) commander Colonel Marion Sision and Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG-Iloilo) provincial director Teodora Sumagaysay.
