PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur -- The Philippine Army has installed Brig. Gen. Generoso Ponio, a seasoned officer, as the new commander of the First Infantry “Tabak” Division (1ID).

Ponio, deputy chief for operations of Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom), assumed office during Friday's turnover of command ceremony at Camp Cesar Sang-an that houses the Army’s 1st Infantry Division headquarters in the nearby town of Labangan.

Ponio, who took part in liberating Marawi City in 2017 as deputy commander of the 103rd Infantry Brigade, replaced Maj. Gen. Roberto Ancan, who was assigned as the commander of the Central Command based in Cebu City.

Army chief Lt. Gen. Gilbert Gapay, led the ceremony, challenged Ponio to continue the gains of the command geared to achieving lasting peace and sustainable development.

Gapay thanked Ancan for the "exceptional leadership and stalwart service" he rendered during his stint as the commander of the division.

“Let us be guided by our over-all direction, which is to sustain the momentum in capacitating the Army towards greater mission effectiveness,” Gapay said.

Ancan thanked the leadership of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) as well as the stakeholders for the trust and confidence given him during his stint in the 1st Infantry Division.

Ponio vowed to focus on the marching orders of the AFP to end all the threats to national security by 2022.

“As the team captain of the Tabak Division, we must jell and develop a potent force capable of performing any kind of missions with varying degrees and capacities,” Ponio said.

“Whatever challenges lies ahead of us, be it in the communist insurgency, terrorism, climate change, nation-building, territorial integrity preservation, let us rise on the occasion as best as we can”, he added.

Ponio belongs to the Philippine Military Academy “Maringal” Class of 1988.

An Airborne and a Scout Ranger, Ponio is described by peers as a well-rounded military officer with expertise in operations, intelligence, training, and managerial acumen.
