An Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) bandit was killed while two policemen were injured in two separate clashes in the island province of Sulu, military officials said Tuesday.
Col. Gerry Besana, Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) information officer, said the first firefight broke out at around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in Barangay Kan Ague, Patikul, Sulu.
Besana said the policemen were escorting a group of teachers from Jolo to Barangay Taung, Patikul when they clashed against some 10 ASG bandits.
However, reports reaching this city disclosed they were ambushed by the ASG bandits that injured two policemen.
Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) personnel rushed the wounded policemen to the Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) for medical treatment.
Besana said troops from the Army’s 32nd Infantry Battalion led by Lt. Col. Ronaldo Mateo together with the police have launched pursuit operation against the ASG in Patikul.
Besana said an ASG bandit was killed in the second clash that happened around 8:31 a.m. Tuesday in Sitio Halu-Halu, Barangay Bakaan, Simisa Island, Banguingui, Sulu.
He said the troops of the Marine Battalion Landing Team-3 (MBLT-3) were on security operation when they encountered a group of bandits. The troops recovered the remains of the slain ASG bandit and one carbine rifle following a 15-minute firefight.
Lt. Gen Arnel Dela Vega, Westmincom chief, said an undetermined number of ASG members "could have died due to loss of blood after the encounter especially that our troops are still pursuing them as of this report."
“While operations are vigorously undertaken to neutralize the remaining bandits, we still encourage other Abu Sayyaf members to lay down their arms in order to finally have peace in Sulu,” dela Vega added.
