From the Malaya Business Insight (May 8): 3 Abu Sayyaf bandits killed in Sulu
THREE Abu Sayyaf members were killed yesterday in military operations to rescue two policemen and two companions kidnapped by the bandit group in Patikul town, Sulu over a week ago.
Brig. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, commander of the military’s Joint Task Force Sulu, said artillery rounds and attack helicopters pounded Abu Sayyaf positions in support of the ground troops, during the firefight.
Sobejana said troops from the Army’s 21st Infantry Battalion clashed with the Abu Sayyaf men in Sitio Sangay, Barangay Buhanginan in Patikul town at 6:14 a.m.
He said the Abu Sayyaf men, numbering 70 men, were led by sub-leaders Idang Susukan and Almujer Yadah.
It was Yadah and his men who seized PO2 Benierose Alvarez and PO1 Dinah Gumahad, and companions Jacosalem Ahamad Blas and Faizal Ahidji on April 29 in Barangay Liang, Talipao town.
Sobejana said intelligence information identified the slain bandits only through their aliases -- Moktar, Julhadi, and Surayb.
Yesterday’s encounter was the second. The first was on Tuesday last week when forces of the 5th Scout Ranger Battalion clashed with the kidnappers, resulting in the death of one of the bandits.
The Abu Sayyaf is reportedly seeking a P5-million for the policewomen and P300,000 for the two other victims.
