From InterAksyon (Mar 28): Second kidnapped tugboat officer rescued in Basilan - military
The second of two tugboat officers kidnapped by suspected extremists off Basilan last week was rescued by government troops Monday night, the military said.
Major General Carlito Galvez Jr., chief of the Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom), said in a statement that chief engineer Laurencio Tiro was rescued by troops of the 4th Special Forces Battalion during an operation against the Abu Ssayyaf in Sitio Sasa, Barangay Basakan, Muhammad Adjul town, Basilan around 10:30 p.m.
Tugboat captain Aurelio Agac-ac, who was snatched along with Tiro last Thursday when gunmen attacked the roll-on, roll-off vessel they were towing from Cebu City to General Santos City, had escaped from his captors earlier and was found by soldiers.
He has since returned home to Cebu.
The rescue of Tiro came at the tail-end of “four days of intensive of focused military operations by elements of (Joint Task Force) Basilan under Colonel Juvymax Uy, consisting of troops of (the) 4th Special Forces Battalion under Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Bacala, with Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team under Muhammad Adjul Mayor Talib Pawaki,” Galvez said.
He added that Tiro was being ferried to Westmincom headquarters in Zamboanga City where he will be given a medical checkup.
