AT LEAST 1,700 families evacuated in Barangay Suawan, Marilog District following an armed encounter Saturday afternoon that wounded a barangay tanod.
Reports said 1,000 families temporarily stayed at the house of former barangay councilor Bernardo Liawan in Sitio Unapan Proper, while 700 families took shelter at the barangay covered court.
Barangay tanod Sonny Dumali Tumanding, 40, of Sitio Unapan, sustained gunshot wounds in his chest as he was caught in the crossfire while troopers of the army’s 3rd Infantry Battalion and members of New People’s Army (NPA) exchanged gun fire in Sitio Mountain Side at 4 p.m. Saturday.
He was then brought to the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) for treatment.
According to the report, the 3rd IB troopers and a team of militiamen under the 72nd Infantry Brigade were conducting security patrol in the area due to reported presence of the armed group.

They encountered the members of Pulang Bagani Command 2 of the NPA’s Southern Mindanao Regional Committee (SMRC) under alias Aldrin.
Government troopers continued to conduct pursuit operation against the fleeing rebels.
