The Philippines – Conflict and population displacement (DG ECHO, OCHA, UNICEF, NGOs, Local Media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 21 December 2016)
- The Armed Forces and the Maute Group, a known ISIS-affiliate, clashed after the town hall of Butig Lanao Del Sur in Mindanao was sieged by the Maute Group, where it hoisted the flag of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.
- The government forces have regained control of the Butig town hall and clearing operations are ongoing. The number of deaths on both sides is unconfirmed.
- It is estimated that between 11 000 to 16 000 people have been displaced during the conflict, seeking refuge in nearby villages. The government has declared that people have started to move back to their homes.
