From Malaya (Dec 17): NPA killed in Negros
A NEW People’s Army member was killed in a firefight with government forces in Cauayan town in Negros Occidental yesterday.
The fatality, Tata Sarona, was identified by rebel returnees, said Maj. Ray Tiongson, public affairs officer of the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division based in Capiz.
Seized from Sarona’s possession was an M14 rifle.
Tiongson said troops from the Army’s 79th Infantry Battalion were conducting security operations when they encountered rebels at around 6:10 a.m. in sitio Canbanbanan in barangay Camalandaan.
He said the two sides traded fire for about 10 minutes, after which the communist rebels withdrew, leaving behind Sarona and his rifle.
No casualty was reported on the military side.
The soldiers were sent to the area after the Army received reports from concerned citizens about the presence of the rebels who were “threatening the civilians and are planning to continue their atrocities in the area,” Tiongson said.
