A police officer was killed while another was wounded when
armed men waylaid a police car in Bukidnon, the police said Monday.
Police Supt. Gervacio Balmaceda, spokesperson of the
regional police command, identified the lone fatality as PO3 Gerardo Luceno.
The wounded, a certain PO1 Luzano, is now recuperating in a
hospital in Bukidnon, Balmaceda said.
The armed men believed to be members of the New People’s
Army (NPA) carted away two M-16 rifles and two Gloc 17 pistols, both issued to
the police officers.
Balmaceda said that the suspects also took away the
camouflage shirt and combat boots of Luceno.
An initial investigation disclosed that the police officers
were on board a patrol car in responding to a call for assistance on the
burning of a sugar cane plantation in the village of Eden
in Pangantucan, Bukidnon over the weekend.
Balmaceda said the patrol car hit a land mine (an improvised
explosive device) planted along the way, which resulted in a firefight.
He said that Luceno was fatally hit while Luzano was wounded
during the exchange of gunfire.
Balmaceda said that a combined police and military team has
been dispatched to pursue the armed group that fled to the neighboring villages
in Panngantucan.
