Government troops have captured a New People's Army (NPA)
camp in the hinterlands of Calbiga, Samar
province during an hour-long encounter last Dec. 11.
Lt. Col. George Domingo, 87th Infantry Battalion commander,
said his men were able to capture the rebel base after receiving tips from
residents long tired of the extortion and harassment of the NPA rebels.
The captured NPA encampment has 30 makeshift huts, two
kitchens, three "bulwagan" (halls) that can accommodate 50 persons.
Recovered from the scene of encounter are the following: one
M-60 general purpose machine gun with 90 rounds; one M-653 automatic rifle; two
Claymore-type landmines; one 32-inch flat-screen TV; a Cignal cable
transceiver; a generator set; one chainsaw; several medical equipment and
medicines, assorted foodstuffs and subversive documents.
The rebels suffered undetermined number of casualties as
evidenced by the bloodstains in their withdrawal route while two soldiers were
wounded during the encounter.
