Bunawan, Agusan del Sur – Six Army soldiers, one of them a junior officer, were wounded when heavily armed communist insurgents ambushed them on their way back to headquarters at Barangay Bunawan Brook here, according to a military report.
The ambush of elements of the 26th Infantry Battalion (26th IB) occurred at 3:15 p.m. Monday at Bulung-bulongan area of Barangay Bunawan Brook but the soldiers were able to promptly retaliate, resulting in a firefight with a group believed to be New People’s Army (NPA) rebels from the nearby Diwata Mountain range.
The military surmised that group was the same armed guerillas who figured in a gunfight earlier in the day against another group 26th IB soldiers.
The NPAs were said to be members of Guerilla-Front Committee 14 of the NPA Northeastern Mindanao Regional Committee (NMRC).
The wounded soldiers were immediately evacuated to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
The ambush took place 10 days before the 12-day ceasefire that the NPA and the central committee of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) declared would start on December 23.
“Upon the recommendation of the negotiating panel of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP), the central committee of the CPP hereby declares to all commands and units of the New People’s Army (NPA) and the people’s militias a ceasefire order that will take effect from 12:01 a.m. of 23 December 2015 to 11:59 p.m. of 3 January 2016,” the CPP said in a post at the NDFP website on Tuesday.
