From the Philippine Information Agency (Dec 18): Naval Forces promote creativity through lantern, building designs

SAN FERNANDO CITY, Dec. 18 (PIA) – Besides securing the Philippine archipelago, the Naval Task Force 40 also promotes creativity among its men in the spirit of Christmas.

The naval fleet found time to show off their skills and artistry in designing their buildings and came up with originally designed “parol” or lanterns using indigenous and recycled materials.

The designs, which were made of the cheapest materials, were part of a friendly competition among the Naval officers.

According to Lieutenant Archie Aldanza, civil military operations officer of the Naval Task Force 40, winners will be receiving cash gifts from the morale and welfare program of the naval forces.

Ten buildings utilized in the Camp Ernesto Ogbinar in Poro challenged each other for the building and lantern contest while seven quarters occupied by seven married enlisted personnel quarters participated in the challenge.

The different units per building were: the Headquarters Naval Task Force 40 or NTF40, Naval Intelligence Service Group Northern Luzon or NISGNL, 301st Armed Forces of the Philippines Procurement Service and Naval Special Operations Unit 2 (AFPPS and NAVSOU2), Civil Military Operations Office and Staff Judge Advocate, Headquarters Naval Station Ernesto Ogbinar and Intelligence Office, Naval Finance Service Unit La Union and Accounting Office, Logistics/Special Disbursing Officer and Management Fiscal Office, Naval Service Depot LU, Naval Information Communication and Technology Service LU, Personnel and Admin/Medical and Dental.

Uniquely designed lanterns and decorated buildings carried themes on climate change adaptation and eco-friendly like banana leaves, banana trunk fiber, cogon grass/stalks , dried areca palm (bua) fruit/flowers stems, mahogany bark and flower stems, coconut fiber, dried fruits, dried pine tree flowers and stems, palm tree stems and leaves and different natural-growing plants and trees.

They also made used of sea shells, small beach stones, coconut shells, bamboo sawdusts; even old used medical materials like gauze bandages, facial masks, syringes, empty vials, old styropores.

Communication facilities which are already unserviceable were also utilized like telephone/wires, cctv paraphernalias/camera, old antenna.

They also included empty plastic softdrink bottles/cans, empty tetra juice packs, newspapers, wires, cut wrappers, aluminum foils, used plastic spoons and cups, straw, paper, old boxes.

Aldanza said that winners will be announced during the Navy Christmas Party on Dec. 19 in La Union.
