The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) is digging deeper into
the extortion activity as motive of the van explosion but would not reveal
details of the follow up investigation it is pursuing against one person of
interest captured on CCTV footage disembarking from the UV Express passenger
van outside the SM Van Terminal.
Meantime, police authorities revealed that the IED used in
the explosion was a 60 millimeter mortar shell with detonator and cellphone as
a triggering device.
Davao City Police Office (DCPO) spokesperson Milgrace Driz
cautioned media and netizens from posting or sharing in social network the CCTV
footage showing the person of interest in order not to compromise the ongoing
investigation and operation.
It was learned earlier that a Pikit criminal group had
extorted money from the UV Express van operator Gregorio Guerrero. Police is
eyeing on the person who disembarked in front of the terminal. The person was
picked up by another person on board a motorcycle.
DCPO has already created the Special Investigation Task
Group UV Express which will be led by Police City Director Vicente Danao with
the deputy city director Francis Donald Brillante as assistant TG commander and
Sr. Superintendent Noemi Austero of the Regional Crime Laboratory Office 11, P/Superintendent
Crislie Cainong of the Anti Cyber Crime, P/Chief Inspector Johanna May DC
Lagundi of CIDG 11, P/Superintendent Jed Clamor Chief Intelligence DCPO,
P/Chief Inspector Alfredo Santillana of the Talomo Police Station and Driz.
On Wednesday morning, an improvised explosive device
exploded inside a UV Express passenger van and wounded the vehicle’s conductor
when it passed through the Eco West drive near SM City Davao.
The lone victim was identified as alias Tatat Besanes, who
was hit in the head and back of his body. He was rushed to the Southern
Philippines Medical Center. The van driver, 50-year-old Herman Daag was unhurt
but he was under observation by the Central 911 medical team after his blood
pressure shoot up.
The passenger van left Pikit, North Cotabato province at 5
a.m. yesterday and arrived in Davao
City at 9:30 a.m. After
dropping off the last three passengers including one male in front of SM City
Davao Van Terminal and two inside the terminal, the driver and his conductor
drove towards Times Beach area but when it passed through the gate of Ecoland
4000 Residences Condominium along Eco West drive, the right back portion of the
van exploded.
Besanes was still able to drive the van some 100 meters away
from the Condominium’s gate.
Police authorities are getting support in its investigation
from the Philippine Army.
Eastern Mindanao Command spokesperson Alberto Caber said all
troops are on full alert since last week. The Task Force Davao has also
intensified checks of all public utility vehicles at the border checkpoints and
further added more checkpoints to secure the city.
